    Hi,
I have outlook express and I'm just wondering if there is any email client that is much better than outlook? I just need to do the basics. It must be freeware too ;)

Is Thunderbird really any different to Outlook Express? I never really liked it, too slow, so I binned it and now use Opera's M2 client. I don't use fancy-schmancy formatting so it's perfect for me.

Yeah, thats the thing. Outlook is probably fine for me too :o why would I go with Thunderbird or even Opera over outlook?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,488 ✭✭✭Goodshape

When you're comparing anything to Outlook security is usualy a good reason for switching.

I quite like Thunderbird. Havn't tried M2. I've used Pegasus before and that's not too bad either - nothing fancy, straight forward email client.

Thunderbird here aswell. Microsoft and security don't go well together. Also, with extensions and themes, Thunderbird is far better.

Outlook is the expensive one. About the only thing it shares with Outlook Express (free) is the name , file formats , interface, options , export headers are all fairly incompatible between them.

Oh yeah, I meant Outlook Express.

Now, can I install Thunderbird without having firefox explorer?

    thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,287 ✭✭✭NotMe

Yeah absolutely, and you can import all your setting from Outlook Express.

You can, yea. It's compleatly stand alone.

But you should grab Firefox too. As I'm sure you've heard by now, it's the business.

IE seems to do the job for me:)

Don't wanna fill my pc with excess stuff I don't actually need really.

Thanks for all the tips, think I'll install Thunderbird so!!

    hey,

Hi-jack away bud, I'm about to ask about eircom too.

I know the answer to your question, they are both

    mail1.eircom.net

my question is, how do I have my @poker.ie and my @eircom.net one in seperate folders? As it is now, when I receieve a mail from either, they end up in the same folder.

    Thanks!

i only had one problem with thunderbird and that was, when you went to reply to an email it would start at the end of the last message instead of the top like outlook. most clents do it like outlook, so i gets confusing for the recipient and the sender.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,844 ✭✭✭✭cormie

Any idea how to go about my question above?
    thanks

Go to Tools->Accounts in Thunderbird. Select an account from the list, and choose "Server Settings". Then click on the "Advanced.." button. Switch from "Global Inbox" to "Inbox for this server's account".

Btw, for those of you using Hotmail or Yahoo or Lycos webmail: http://webmail.mozdev.org/

Though I thought Lycos provided POP/IMAP support didn't they?

    Thank you very much!

Now I have outgoing mail set as my @poker.ie one, is recommends I don't use more than one, unless I am an advanced user. What do you guys do? It sends the mails fine from both accounts so will I bother?

    Also,
how come sometimes "GET ALL NEW MESSAGES" is blanked and I can only click on either of the accounts?

    Go to
    Tools>Account Settings>Composition and Addressing>
check "Automatically quote the original message when replying" then from pulldown menu select "start my reply above the quote"

Don't quote me, but I think there's an extension for that. Can't remember the name of it though.

Spambayes can be used to filter spam from most email apps by sitting between you and the email server.
But if you are using outlook (not express) it sits on the toolbar.

    Pegasus is what I use.

It's easy to use but VERY powerful.

Get the no new window on double click extension too http://www.chuonthis.com/extensions/

It stops Thunderbird opening up a new window when you double click on an email

I don't get you, I see how it opens up a new window, but what does it do instead? I can click an email once and I'll be able to read it without it opening in a new window already

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,844 ✭✭✭✭cormie

also, how do I go about putting a password on Thunderbird so when I put in the password it opens up as it usually would and I can see all tha mails? And instead of having to put in a password when I send and receive, the one at the start will replace it? thanks:)
