What happens with copyright, are stories published the property of the author, your property, or up for grabs. Just asking, as I have a series of stories I'm working on that I'd like to try and have published some day, I might submit them, but that would depend on what the copyrights do.

Submit the work "copyright 2005 <name>" would be sufficient surely? Magazines often publish work "with permission". You can submit the work "with permission" to print it in <x> issue.

When I worked with a magazine before we often did that with photographs. We see something we like, contact the owner and they give (or not as the case may be) permission for "one time" use, so to speak. If you're that worried about your work you should send yourself a copy by registered post and keep it unopened. Do that before submitting your work.

Copyright always remains with the author, unless it is specifically sold or given away OR if the work is produced in the course of employment. So the copyright on the work of staff journalists usually belongs to the paper, but freelancers retain copyright.

This thread is five years old; it's probably best to let it go back to sleep.
