    Hi,

On my Advent 7040 laptop I have a black line running vertically down the middle of my screen. Its about an inch in width. I am guessing the screen is fubar but if anyone else has any info on this or where I would be able to get it fixed please let me know.

Also laptop is only about 11 months old but the shop where I bought it has closed down so I cant return it.

i know advent usually are handled by pcworld. being 11months old, it should be under warranty. try calling them ,and would help if you had a receipt.

    good luck!

I had the same problem with an Acer laptop, I sent it back to them and they had to replace the screen. Try the manufacturer to see if they will fix it for you.

Cant find much on Advent either???????
Is there any manuals with it ,with helplines..........etc......... try that.
If that is a Cul De Sac try go into a shop that sells advent and ask where they get them from and explain your situation.I presume its under warranty.

says here that it is the Dixon Stores Groups own brand (Dixons, Currys, and PC World)

What shop did you buy it from?

I was down in PC World and it is their own brand. I bought it from an Independent Retailer in Waterford. Power Computers in Johnstown Industrial Estate. Laptop was brand new and I didn't know then that Advents was a PC World brand.

Anyways went looking for the serial number and it has been scratched off so it seems I have learned an expensive lesson. Dont deal with Dodgy cowboys when buying laptops.

PC world estimate it will cost 600 - 800 euro for a replacement screen so I aint doing that. Looks like I now have a desktop as opposed to a laptop

I rang a few places but it was going to cost aas much as the laptop was worth. So i decided to take it apart and found if I added pressure under the cover wher the screen was blank the picture was fine. So I stuck a piece of card in there, put it back together and its working now. Not the most technical solution but hey it works.

Serial number scratched off? Stinks of theft to me

Perhaps that's why the shop has since closed down.

    Certainly smells of something.

Do the Advents not have the system barcode number in the BIOS like Dells and Compaqs and the like do?

    Hi,

used to work for laptop manufacturer many moons ago and it wasnt advent but they all use the same screens and connectivity methods.

What I would advise is removing the keyboard and haveing a look at the motherboard. There should be a ribbon cable that attaches the invertor of the screen to the motherboard. Alot of the time this can get stressed and slightly puled out of position. Remove and reconnect this cable and try it out.

If that doesnt work there is one other route you might take...

On your screen there is the actual screen that you look at and an invertor. Many times the screen is fine but the invertor is faulty.... invertors are alot cheaper then full screens. Have a look in device manager and see does it tell you what moitor it has detected... go on ebay and see if there is an invertor for sale for that screen.

Also alot of the time someone may have a similar machine that they have spilled water on or killed a motherboard on etc.... usually even with liquid damaged machines the display panel will be fine. Check EBAY or post on here or the buy and sell etc to see if you can find anyone selling a knackered machine, usually you can pick them up screwed for little or nothing.

a tft screen should set you back >€200 from ebay.com

Its currently what im doing to fix the screen on this machine (Compaq Evo with yoghurt vision)

yea, best thing to do, is pull the screen out and pop the part number into ebay.com search

eg LG LP1410X0 or whatever. You may get one as cheap as 130 euro including customs if you are lucky.
