What do you peeps get as typical ping times ?. I installed COD (and UO, GFM) last night and am getting 90-100ms best case (UK servers) but its erratic at best. I'm on Eircom BB too.

I used to get 50ms on IOLBB+ but my connection is messed up at the moment (since the "upgrade")

Well, when my IBB connection isn't playing up (which is never lately...) my ping on UK CoD servers is between 15-30ms and >50ms on French servers (I mostly play in France).
I rarely/never play UO but I know pings aren't as good as on CoD (perhaps due to bigger maps?).

Furthermore you can mess around with your ".cfg" (configuration) settings to improve your ping or make your connection more stable.
Entering "/cl_maxpackets 30" (the minimum) in the console will make your ping go as low as possible but it will be unstable.
Entering "/cl_maxpackets 100" (the maximum) in the console will make your ping nice and stable but it won't go as low as possible... (FYI: a stable ping of 80ms is better than a ping that goes up and down from 30ms to 90ms every 2-3 seconds).

Haket, 90-100ms on UK servers is poor... Even on UO you should be around 50ms max. Think it's time to ring those friendly and professional people at Eircom! :p

Mine is usually in or around the 50's , I'm with eircom and I find COD one of the best games for netcode .

Enter command "/cl_maxpackets 100" and your ping will stabilise itself at around 50ms and will only vary by 2 or 3ms. Much more stable and easier to play as a result... ;)

Getting 40~80ms with Digiweb WiFi on UK servers...

Hey, I tried again last night on UO (COD wouldn't connect for some reason) and got 50-70ms pings, pretty playable. I'll try again tonight and maybe try you config suggestions. Ta.

I'm using Ripwave in Dunlaoghaire...just about works!!
I've got COD (and UO, GFM!!!) installed and am getting 100-150ms best case scenario. Hell, I just turn down all the graphic and sound options in the game, (do this by habit from the old days of 56k) and its playable mostly....

Got pings of 40-60 last year on Eircom home starter dsl. ah well.

*running on an 4 year old 1.3ghz pc with 512 ddr ram, 32 mb radeon card and 160gb drives

Steffano, can you give more detail on the "/cl_maxpackets 100" ?

Do you use it when lauching the EXE? Does it works for CoD UO?

    Thanks,

    Hi Zeroy,

Basically all you need to do is press the "`/¬/¦" key (above the "Tab" key, to the left of the "1/!" key) to open the console. in there you type "/cl_maxpackets (then space and value)". Minimum is 30. Maximum is 100.

This basically determines the number of fps (frames per second) you are uploading. FYI: must be below your "maxfps" (see below for maxfps settings).
The more maxpackets you have, the more likely you are to injure your opponent. The more you have, the more your ping will increase (but it's worth it! And your connection will be more stable! :) )

The above is one of the many "Registry Tweaks" found in games based on the Quake 3 engine. This means it will also work on UO! ;)

There are 100's of tweaks available on CoD/UO! And handy tools too!

Try "/cl_lagometer 1" (do deactivate: "/cl_lagometer 0"). This will show you the state of your connection to the server and the state of your fps.
The line at the top should always be blue. If it ever goes yellow (a tiny bit of yellow is normal) it means you are experiencing lag/reduction in fps...
The lower the green line at the bottom, the better the ping! If you get red lines, it means you are having packet losses (a few is normal).

You also have "/com_maxfps (then space and value)". This command enables you to up your frame rate and thus achieve a better image quality. (Furthermore, setting it at 125 will enable you to climb on things you are "not supposed to" such as the Axis respawn on Carentan, above the Panzerfaust).
Again, it is better to play with a regular fps rate (same as ping). If your Graphics Card can handle 125 fps (most 128MB cards will), leave it at that. It is believed to be the ideal.

You also have "/snaps (then space and value)". Value must be between 20 and 60. This determines the number of fps you are downloading from the server. The higher the snaps, the lower the ping. But increasing the snaps also means increasing the number of packets lost (you will "lag" more = not good). Mine is set at 40 as it works well on pretty much all the servers.

"/rate (then space and value)" is another one. Value must be between 5000 and 25000. The higher the rate, the more likely you are to injure your opponent. But the higher it goes, the higher the ping goes...

Ideally, and if you have a proper connection, you should play with the below:

    /cl_maxpackets 100
    /snaps 40
    /rate 25000

In general, with a proper connection, your ping should be around 48ms with the above.

Another thing: if you want to find the value of a specific tweak, just enter the command without a value and press "Return". This will give you the value currently set and the default value.
Furthermore, the default values are set by the game manufacturer for the minimal PC configuration (i.e. Pentium III 600MHz, 128MB of RAM, 32MB Graphics Card, etc = crap PCs). As most of you have PCs that can handle a lot more, it is worth playing around with the above commands to find the most efficient settings!

I'll try finding a link on the web where the bulk of these Registry Tweaks are listed and explained. If anybody already has one, feel free to post it here!

Enjoy the frag and support the Call of Duty forum! ;)

There are a few tweaks in this link in the Call of Duty Links sticky on the main COD forum page:

    Link

The one in there with Server Configuration tips has a lot of config settings for the server console and client.
