My Son was to have NTL BB installed in his today but as he wants the point installed in the converted attic room/office,..the installer said he would have to do the necessary drilling/hole making himself or get an electrician to do it he also said we need to get a length of the proper coax cable and feed it through from the inside out leaving a couple of feet each side, enough for him to connect to from the External Terminating Unit (ETU) and also enough inside for him to attach the TV/FM box.

Is the "proper cable" FT100, FT125 or is there another type of external cable NTL use ?

and before yez say it,....yes I am bewildered by this

The NTL installer is supposed to do all this for you and supply the gear.

I got NTL installed just three weeks ago, they installed two new points for me upstairs and installed all the gear. They did a great job.

Ring NTL and complain about this, the installer is probably just a contractor and trying to avoid work, NTL should sort this for you.

If they don't then an alternative is to install the NTL modem downstairs with the TV point and use a wireless router to connect it to the pc upstairs.

If using wireless make sure to get wireless gear with WPA security and use it.

Cant believe you are thinking of doing that for them! Is there any other ISP available to you? The bigger the company it seems the worse the service is.. Ordered an Electric shower from ESB recently, paid price to include installation, the ELECTRICIAN arrived & said he does,nt run in the ELECTRIC cable!!! Needless to say they got the shower back, got money back & gave it to a REAL electrician who was willing to do a bit of work for his money!!

End Of Rant... had to get that out...........

Definitely complain to ntl - that moron should be sacked / get no more contracts.

Check out ntls website - the page on Broadband Installation
    3. If the customer requires their Cable Modem to be installed in another room where there is no CATV point a CATV point installation will be required and will follow the standard steps laid out for Overhead Cabling below.

    Overhead Cabling

    4. A CATV point consists of a black or white coaxial cable run from an external point on the home into the house.
    5. The external point is generally at the front of the house on the eaves where the cabling is overhead or at the External Terminating Unit (ETU) where the cabling is underground.
    6. A small hole is drilled in the agreed surface and the cable passed through to the inner wall. This hole is then sealed to prevent water entering.
    7. The cable is secured to the outer wall using cable clips at equally spaced intervals. This is for cosmetic purposes only.
    8. The cable continues into the house along the skirting board to the position where the CATV point will be installed. In some circumstances the cable may be required to run from one room to the next resulting in drilling internally. This will be discussed with you beforehand.
    9. Once all internal cabling is completed the CATV point is connected and the CATV point is secured to the inner wall near the skirting board.
    10. Lastly, a lead is connected to the CATV point which is now ready to connect to the Cable Modem..

All cabling, location of CATV point and the point of entry into the house, will be agreed with the customer before commencing the installation.
Your son doesn't live on the 10th story of a high rise does he :D
