My Son was to have NTL BB installed today but as he wants the point installed in the converted attic room/office,..the installer said we would have to do the necessary drilling/hole making himself or get an electrician to do it  he also said we need to get a length of the proper coax cable and feed it through from the inside out leaving a couple of feet each side, enough for him to connect to from the External Terminating Unit (ETU) and also enough inside for him to attach the TV/FM box.

Is the "proper cable" FT100, FT125 or is there another type of external cable NTL use ?

and before yez say it,....yes I am bewildered by this  :confused

The cable they use is by Commscope - RG6u - tested up to 1Ghz, and only available from
    Anixrer
    Unit 16 Westlink Ind. Estate
    Kylemore Road
    Dublin 10, Ireland
    Tel: +353-1-6233-688
    Fax: +353-1-6233-717

However, the engineer should have left you the cable. Thats disgraceful asking you to buy the cable. If I was you I would ring NTL back and give out.

It's not my house so I can only advise, the house has the standard 2 point
setup, 1 downstairs & the other upstairs, the 3rd point is a DIY connection/split from the upstairs wall outlet which was extended upwards and connected to a wall outlet fitted in the converted attic room, this is the point that was tested by the installer today and found to have an unsuitable/weak signal.
He than asked if the PC could be moved downstairs closer to the NTL outlet :( , not suitable as the attic room is a home office and it's where the BB is needed.
My advise would be to insert a small length of plastic trunking through the facia board and into the attic which would allow the installer to feed the cable through, from what I hear he may have been reluctant to go drilling
holes trying to gain assess to the attic space when there was an easer option available as he saw it . ;) cheery picking ??

The following is a step-by-step guide on how ntl will provide consumers with an additional CATV (Cable Television) point for their ntl Broadband.

    Installing a CATV point

    Underground Cabling

Customers living in estates with underground cabling will have an ‘External Terminating Unit’ at the side of each house, this means that each house will is pre-wired with no less than two CATV points; one in the living room and one in the bedroom.
If a CATV point currently exists, meets the required specifications and is positioned near to the Cable Modem no new cabling will be installed. The installer appointed by ntl will test the CATV point to determine if it meets the required specifications. If a new CATV point is not required go to point 10.
If the customer requires their Cable Modem to be installed in another room where there is no CATV point a CATV point installation will be required and will follow the standard steps laid out for Overhead Cabling below.
    Overhead Cabling

A CATV point consists of a black or white coaxial cable run from an external point on the home into the house.
The external point is generally at the front of the house on the eaves where the cabling is overhead or at the External Terminating Unit (ETU) where the cabling is underground.
A small hole is drilled in the agreed surface and the cable passed through to the inner wall. This hole is then sealed to prevent water entering.
The cable is secured to the outer wall using cable clips at equally spaced intervals. This is for cosmetic purposes only.
The cable continues into the house along the skirting board to the position where the CATV point will be installed. In some circumstances the cable may be required to run from one room to the next resulting in drilling internally. This will be discussed with you beforehand.
Once all internal cabling is completed the CATV point is connected and the CATV point is secured to the inner wall near the skirting board.
Lastly, a lead is connected to the CATV point which is now ready to connect to the Cable Modem..
All cabling, location of CATV point and the point of entry into the house, will be agreed with the customer before commencing the installation.

    Sounds simple enough to me.
Maybe that installer should read up on the terms of installation.

Total bull! I have had ntl installed no problem in a converted attic. The guy came out and was finished in less than 10 minutes!!! Methinks lazy installer just doesn't want to get his hands dirty crawling around attics! :p

I'd report that installer back to ntl. He's a real lazy cowboy.
Ok it took the 3rd attempt to get 2 additional tv points fitted, from an external box under the eaves, but the installers when they finally did it
    a) drilled in underneath part of the fascia and ran a cable just into the attic space (not converted), so I can drop it to a bedroom below when I am ready. left the wall box on the attic floor ready to go.
    b) They also ran a second cable, down the front wall, around the front porch (ok the porch part was in the drain pipe running around the roof to catch the rain water), down the outside wall at the far side, drilled in thru the wall into the converted garage, fitted the wall box, and then ran more cable around the room to where the TV will be.

Is there an install charge, I had to pay 50 quid to cover all this. they were gone inside 2hours. (pity they forgot the 2nd digibox they gotta come back just to do it).....
