just formatting and updating an 8100 for a friend,
it has an ethernet port but apparently no nic installed.
ie, i can plug an ethernet cable into it, but theres no nic in device manager,
various programs camnnt find one either,
was like this under me, but thats a pos, so i tried xp, still the same

seems dell might have shipped without a nic....
is this likely or is it fckued?

its a few years old and entering the service tag on dells site gives very litttle info.

    chers,

ps, anyone got a battery for one of these ;) ?

If there's a nic port on the laptop .... its more than likely fooked!

As the nic is built as part of the motherboard....This is a common enough fail on dell laptops.

It may simply be a weird one that wants you to install a driver.

theres no new hardware being detected, usually xp takes care of that,
ill check when i get home for a driver but i was thinking it was either an option on the model, dell are stingy ;), or else fooked.

    thnaks for the replies

Check the bios, there is an option on many laptops to turn it off, must give you at least an extra 10 seconds on the battery.

    well,

    no option in the bios,
    rang dell, they didnt know,

said to run a diagnostic, that took 45 minutes and reported nothing wrong with the system, cba ringing back to see whats next on the list.
guess theres no nic, seems strange altogther

I done a dell laptop a few weeks ago..similiar problem and I had no dell disks to check.. I entered service tag and downloaded whatever drivers were there for network cards and found wireless and network card..so it's worth trying

I have an Inspiron with a network port but no network card. It was an option when I was buying it, i didnt opt for it. I recently bought a network/modem card from www.impactcomputers.com to replace the modem card inside. replaced the modem card and now it works fine. Its under a panel underneath
