I was called for jury duty (in the North) and the procedure was that the Jury Service paid me and then the equivalent amount was taken from my salary by work.

You will also receive a travel allowance and as far as i am aware this does not have to be repaid as it is not work-related.

Obviously (as per above poster) the rues for Eire are slightly different.

Yes they have to Pay you for your time.. employer cant do anything about it.. chances are you will not even be picked.. I sat there for hours and actually wanted to be but my name was never called. They have way more people than they need as plenty of people are dismissed or cant do it because of holidays etc.

yeah you get paid as normal by your job but they don't pay for your travel expenses...
but you will get free lunch every day if you are picked. but you wouldn't want to be picked if its for the high court, sometimes they go on for months. it probably wouldn't last a week if its the circuit court.
