    Had a similar problems with a mates Thinkpad a few weeks ago. Ended up replacing the hard drive because it was a lock on the actual hard drive.

    Would be great if some one had a solution. Would save me feckiing the old HDD in the bin.

    get a dos boot disk, boot from it and then type the following;

    c:
    cd\windows
    rename *.pwl *.xxx

    you don't even need a boot disk actually... just press F8 when the computer is booting and choose command prompt.

    and if you need to undo this, just repeat the above but type "rename *.xxx *.pwl" instead

    you'll most likely need a windows '98 cd if you want to do a reinstall...
    if you're lucky, booting to command prompt and typing "c:\windows\options\cabs\setup.exe" might work (the windows 98 installation files may be in that folder)
