I have a 300GB HD mostly used for storing random crap and games folder (windows is not installed on this drive) and yesterday i had 106GB free space... Now I have 12GB left... Where did the rest go... I ran diskeeper and to my amusement it was system files [green in diskeeper] and just wondering how to gain back my space... I have a pic of the Drive map on this thread and I have tried the following... Deleting pagefile on shutdown, disabling system restore and deleting all restore points, running disk cleaner and other disk cleaning programs but to my surprise still 12GB free space... HELP

I had one of my drives fill up because I was unintentionally making ingame movies because I'd binded the key to buy ammo(in css) to the default one movie recorder in fraps

    maybe it's something similar?

I wish that was the case.. I was using fraps a good while ago but still I did a properties check 173GB size on all folders and hidden files... Still where did the 106GB GO????

Defrag it. Delete files... that'll free up space. What are the system files on the drive. I assume it's an external drive or is it your main system drive?

did you read any of the original post, Lump?
diskeeper is defragging software and he's already said that it's not his system drive...

(i don't have any advice, just felt like bitching at Lump... :) )

It’s just an internal sata drive for dumping files on... Still confused on why system files are there... There are more system files on the 300GB drive than my Windows 100GB drive?? :S

    Is it NTFS?

IS there some sort of system backup/restore running?

if you haven't got the option 'view all files and folders' switched on, then do so, you should see what other files are still there.
maybe something went badly wrong with the pagefile.sys if it on that drive.

What does the Disk Management tool in Adminstrative tools say? You didn't accidentally shave off a partition somehow, did you?

His drive image shows that pagefile.sys is not grossly the problem.

    Could well be system restore.

Or something else. You need to go through the drive manually and check every folder and see which one is obscenely large - right click each folder you can find in the c: and go to properties......

This will give you the amount of data stored.

Find the huge one (and I would doubt there is more than one) and go to that and methodically keep doing "properties" to find the cause. Then figure out what one earth went wrong......

    Best of luck.....

Have you got Norton AV installed? It has a "feature" whereby all deleted files go into its own recycle bin. They aren't actually deleted, but put in a hidden directory.

Also, download TreeSize and it will tell you what files are taking up teh most space and where they are. It may shed some more light on the situation.

i had a virus before that made a folder and kept recreating itself with a different name within that floder! each file was 500kb and named after a game or film or song. it ended up taking up a good bit of space on me! maybe its something similar? try look for a folder that is especially big.
