Blarney Stone is just outside Madison Sq Gardens on 34th street... I hit it every time I'm up in the city...

Alot of J1'ers don't go to bars as they need ID over 21's, loads have partys of some sorts

but you usually just find people rather than look for them

solas is a really nice bar thats owned by irish people (northern irish i think) its on 9th street between 2nd and 3rd. its just a cool bar, apart from the name one would never suspect it of being an irish bar.

i j1'd a few years back and was over 21 at the time, but most of the people i was with were under 21 and rarely had any problems getting served. when they did we just left whatever pub it was and found a new one.

Just a question - why travel 3000 miles and then walk into some carbon copy Irish pub? Why not actually go to a native one? I can't understand this logic of travelling to foreign countries only to make a bee-line for the nearest Irish place.

Where technically I agree with you Lemming, I generally find that the Irish pubs are the better places to drink and meet people. Ideally you should try and experience new cultures as best you can and integrate as much as possible but sometimes that means avoiding the whole pub culture which as a nation we are extremely poor at.

Never mind the irish pubs - head for Hog 'N' Heffars in the meat packers districit, it's the pub that Cayote Ugly was based on ... great night out, but make sure not to go there on a wednesday night.

Because the most of the best bars are Irish bars. I was in NYC there a few weeks ago, and without a doubt the best bars we went to were Irish. And we went to alot of native bars aswell.

And as for carbon copy, take Slainte (www.slaintenyc.com) Sin Sin (AKA Leopard Lounge) and the slaughter house (like a goth bar) - They are nothing llike typical irish bars - except for the boozin and the craic

yeah, sin sin is cool aswell, i went there a few times (its just a few blocks away from solas that i mentioned above).

...and if you are female, bring a spare bra if you need 'support' after you leave the bar. Dont say i didnt warn you

In general when I was in NY, I had a rule of thumb of avoiding Irish bars at all costs. If you want to see a football game or something, then fair enough, but I found they are usually full of irish lads out there on the sites and labouring etc. They go to work, finish at 5 and go to the nearest irish bar and sit there til they fall off their stool at 3 in the morning and do that every bloody night.. If thats what you want then fair enough, but why bother going to NY when you can get that at home..

    Good bars to go to:
McSorleys in the Village -> Dark and light beer only. I know it has an irish name, but its not an 'irish' bar in the shamrocks and leprechauns mode. Good craic.

Mercury Bar 3rd Ave @ 33rd St -> Great bar. Age group is 20 somethings. Nice chicks. Good Beer. Good Music. Had many a great night in here.

Joshua Tree next door to Mercury bar -> In the same mould as mercury bar. Great night out.

Just go to the village, there are loads of great bars down there. Just walk in and try random bars and experience the place. Down around NYU there are a load of studenty type bars and clubs in that area of the village.

As for good nightclubs, most of the places i went to are now closed etc. A few of my mates were over in NY a few weeks ago and most of the places i recommended were closed. This is common in NY anyway for clubs to open and close in a few years like that. I suppose thats what makes the place seem fresh and new all the time. These types of places just pop up in a disused warehouse or something like that.

Great place down in the meat packing district not too far from hogs'n'heffers called 'Filter 14' is still without a doubt the best 'nightclub' ive been in.. I was like an old house that was being renovated but they didnt have planning permission or something like that, so were told to stop renovations... so they guy open a nightclub in the place, so the place was pretty bare, but genius. David Moralez played in there one night and i didnt even realise until the end of the night... it consisted of one room (the living room) and a chill out room downstairs, but it was great... ah those were the days..

anyway my advise. go explore and find the places that you'll always remember... You can do irish bars anytime at home. Dont get me wrong, i've had a few good nights out in irish bars in NY, but dont spend your summer in them... just a waste i reckon...

    enjoy
