Mounting A Scope

My friend gave me a really old .22 single shot winnchester to clean up. its got iron sights that are really hard to c. And nearly impossible to shoot anything past 40 yards. I tested with a jig at 80 yards and its firing consistant. Im considering putting a cheap scope on it but it hasnt any guides or dove tail slots to mount it to.

Any suggestions r ideas to what i should do

Don't do either of the following (both which I have seen!):

    (a) Get out your trust arc welder and weld on a rail.

    (b) Get out your trusty angle grinder and cut rails into the receiver.

A competent gunsmith should be able to fit scope mounts, either by drilling/tapping/screwing or silver soldering them on. The whole thing is likely to cost a lot more than buying a new rifle though.
