new Shopping CentreS at Parkway

I see from Limerick post news that ATLANTIC Homecare is opening soon, on Thursday April 21. Drove by it lately on Childers Road and it looks massive - anyone know what other stores will be in there?

Another article on the Parkway "in addition to the Parkway Shopping Centre, the area will shortly get another major shopping centre on Childers Road <presume this is the one ATLANTIC Homecare is in> and Mr Parkes <owner of the Parkway Shopping Centre> is hoping to build a third , also in the same area which would be one of the biggest in the country outside of Dublin."
Is a third Shopping Centre in the Parkway area really needed ?
He's also looking to have a train stop established behind the Dublin Road shopping centre, linking into the Limerick-Ennis rail service.

Ya, for some really weird reason that area has become a hive for business!
The next devolopment will be in the shape of a rugby ball, i think thats the one that will be huge, although i'm pretty sure that they dont want to build the largest shopping centre, just that they want the parkway area to be a large shopping area (the 2 new places as well as Parkway S.C and Retail Park)

Dont get your hopes up on the rail... thats just politians juping on the bandwagon!
The paper contacted Iarnod Éireann to ask about the proposal and they hadnt heard anything about it!

Dunnes Stores have bought the biggest of the units there and Smith's Toys are opening a superstore there also. There is plans for at least one restaurant in the centre. The plans for the third shopping centre is supposed to be located on the area between the groody river and TK Max/Curry's on the Dublin road. It is planned for about 20 retail units, bars/ restaurants and a cinema. This is only talk at the moment as no planning permission has been granted and there are major concerns about adding to the already ridiculous traffic congestion at the Parkway roundabout.

Well the Cresent shopping centre while big lacks a good DIY store. Besides the Co-op store across from the South Court Hotel there really isn't anything else at that side of the city. Maybe the new extension to the Cresent will bring a decent DIY store?

With Home Base already open, Atlantic Homecare about to open in the next week and B&Q superstore under construction on the Ballysimon road there is plenty of choice on that side of the city and I think it will be a hit. It will also give people a choice rather than everyone flocking to the one shopping centre.

Nice to see a new Dunnes Stores being built out at Jetland in Caherdavin, it amazes me why there isn't a decent shopping centre on that side of the city considering the residential population there.

There is going to be a centre built beyond the coonagh roundabout in 2 years time I think .

    Damn, traffic's bad enough already...

I was there! Its huge, toilets are out of order... so everyone has to use the womens toilets! Quese are backed up to get into the smelly dirty toilet!

Staff dont know where stuff is ... but the place is huge it seems understaffed so at the moment i wont complain about that!

They have no vending machines or little cafe type setup! All they have is a cadbury stand by the checkouts!

All in all it seems very much a builders store or if you where dooing up your house not a 'i'll pop down to ... and have a look' kinda place!

No way!!! Limerick roads are great, try driving in dublin or cork!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,811 ✭✭✭✭billy the squid

i dunno, the one-way system in the city is a complete cock up to be honest. and there must be more sets of traffic lights between careys road and mallow street than there are between the town and Raheen.

what sort of store are dunnes opening in the childers road retail park ???

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,583 ✭✭✭limerick_man

I would say they will make it all clothes and D.I.Y! TBH i donnt see why they are opening out there!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,363 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

The reason Dunnes Stores have bought a unit there is because the Parkway Shopping Centre cannot be expanded any further due to the lack of space. As far as I know their hardware, drapery, clothing and possibly off license departments are moving into the new building. This will allow them to expand their main unit in the Parkway for groceries only while closing the existing smaller units. Apparently renting a retail unit in the Parkway is very expensive. The place badly needs a makeover like the Cresent Shopping Centre.

    GO HARVEY GO !!!!!!?!?!?!?!?!?? :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,871 ✭✭✭Karmafaerie

I think that I might camp outside when they open, just to meet Harvey!
I've got this mental image of Harvey living in the store!
You'd walk in in the morning, and Harvey, wuld be there having a coffee, over by the coffee makers. Then, if you called back in the evening, he'd be there sitting down watching rugby, or aussie rules on one of the televisions!
Maybe I'm going a bit too far, but Harvey has that effect on me!!! :D

Was over that way this morning , both Maplins and Smiths are in there with lights on and stuff , it was before 9:30 , saw a guy go to the Maplins door but it seemed to be closed ., so maybe they are not actually opened for business yet .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,363 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Yes they are not open yet, they are still kitting out the stores. But I think it won't be long before they are open.

At the Childers Retail park, JJB Sports are opening shortly; they have a leisure centre and a retail outlte. Also Maplin will be opening shortly, along with heatons and Harry Corry Interiors. Does anyone know who else is going in there?

    PS Who is Harvey Norman?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,363 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Smith's Toys and Dunnes Stores are opening soon there.

Harvy Norman sounds like some Austrialian/New Zealand maniac who advertises his own shops on the radio, I think on Today FM or 2FM. I think they sell electronic equipment.

Was over that way this morning , Maplins have a sign on the door saying they are opening this weekend .

Maplin are open now alright, bought some stuff there today.

Yeah, I dropped in there on Saturday. I'll still use them as a last resort, though.. they're pretty damn expensive for some stuff. 160gb drives for €99 (you can get 200s online for that), 512mb pendrives for €100 (1gb for less than 100 online) etc. etc.

Its great for PC hobbyists, though... plenty of fans, cases etc.

All the workers fitting out the shops are all British! The development hasnt really seen much improvement in irish jobs, the shops are just bringing their workers with them!

That shows just how expensive we have gotten!

Tell me about it, I was over for a look the other day, I thought i was in england again!! Do they feel that we are incapable of running chain stores here or what? Living there was a nightmare enough, I feel like I'm having flashbacks or entering a crap episode of the twilight zone..denenene..denenene.

I joined the new gym there (JJB Fitness) and it seems like most of the employees are english too...... Are we not good enough?

This is an amazing plan for limerick, it will be able to compete well it the like's of the new Whitwater and Mahon and even the blanccherstown's town centre , as it the existing retail parks etc can take in a lot of people to the already booming area! so in my view it wont affect the city centre that much as it will attract shoppers nationally from as far as cork to even sligo . this will encourage ppl to stop in the city also , if they do a decent job of it
like pedstrainisations and tidying and rejuventing the eyesore areas and attract futher prominent retail brands and intermnational shops, Cruises street is just to small for the city as a whole!
iits obvioius when you come to the city and their is know proper area of shpping areas
for eg. Dunnes on henrys street is a good 5 min walk to cruises street?williams street, you have another Dunnes stores up a bit from the new one which is stupid, brown thomas seems iclelated bar having supermacs across the road
there are vacant idle units left on liddy street and bedord row, neither Duness and Roches seem to invest in prominet commercial street areas which have huge potential,
There are know directions to the irishtown and english part of the city (ot they are clearly not shown?)
the city is lacking important features of a truly modern city it claim it can be??
i hope the parkway centre goes ahead , if it dosent without a doubt limerick will lose out in the future!

so what are the plans for the CBD and existing shopping recretional life of this city ? what can it appeal and offer to amongst the other competing cities such as galway and cork?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,571 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

No offence, mysterious, but I think you win the "2005 Award for the Worst Spelling in a Post" and the "2005 Award for the worst Grammar in a Post". Congratulations! :D:D

Good points made, though. I think there are plans to redo the block around the Savoy/Bedford Row area, but I don't know to what extent.

The reason that JJB have English staff is that it is an english company. I'm sure that the majority of the staff that have come over are well trained and know the ropes of what JJB want to achieve in terms of customer service.

In time, obviously local staff will be employed. I'm sure that it's not a case of 'we're not good enough'

No it doesn't. It shows how attractive it is to come here from Britain to work. A high proportion of the workers on Irish construction sites are also from England.
