    Hey

I have a tv in/out card and transfered some videos to my PC.
The software they gave me sucks because it doesn't compress the files and the files are coming close to 4 gigs.

Could you recommend some freewasre I could use.

    Thanks

    Jayce

what kind of files are they?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 61 ✭✭Jayce

They are MPEG but the files I use are usually the standard ones like avi, wmv etc.

Another question i have is ripping CDs that are protected, are there any ways to get around that? eg, the damageplan album

    Thanks Jayce

4GB for 10 minutes of video would be big, 4GB for two hours of mpeg2 would not be that big, so my question is how long is the 4GB file?

If you want to capture to WMV then you could probably use the video capture program that comes with Windows media player, I think it's Windows Movie Maker. I think it will also capture to AVI, just install Divx or Xvid codec for good quality compression first.

For ripping CDs I use Cdex, but I don't know if it works on protected CDs as I've never had one.

The capture thing is in Windows Movie Maker definately

CDex is able to rip most CDs, but I remember trying to rip an 18 track Il Divo album. Came up that 6 were audio, 4 were data.

I bought an adaptec tv card with tuner for €100

What software do you use to make the videos onto DVD, thats what im trying to do, but the software they gave me sucks cause it doesnt compress the files and burns them straight off.

    Go to http://www.doom9.org/

and read the Follow the Guides

I use TMPGEnc For most Mpeg encodeing http://www.tmpgenc.net/e_main.html

TmpgEnc DVD Author is very good for authoring your own DVDs. It can use mpeg2 or mpeg1 video as input and will give you a Video_TS folder as output which you simply burn to DVD.

As suggested already try doom9.org,also http://www.videohelp.com/ or http://www.digital-digest.com/index.html.
Plenty of guides here to help
dvd shrink works well if the dvd files are larger than 4.7gb.(dvd9).

You can only fit 4.36gb of data once the DVD's are formatted and that malarky. not 4.7gb.

    OK lets start again.

I have a Mpeg video that I transfered from VHS to the PC.

The file size is 3.7gb and when I use sonic my dvd it wont burn it because the file is too big.

So any way to fix that.

    Thanks Jayce

Ah I see. My fault. I only ever use it to create VCDs (Which are MPEG1), whereas DVDs are MPEG2 aren't they? Hrm. Have to think on it.

Have you had a look around http://www.doom9.org/ yet? Its a really knowledgeable community (but they can be harsh on newbies, so use the seach functionality before asking a question.) Their guides section used to be particularly good. I haven't been there in a while though.

tmpgenc creates VCD/DVD compliant mpegs. You can use any burning software capable of burning VCDs/DVSs to create the actual disc.

VIDEO_TS is not a file, rather the folder DVD VOBs are saved/burned into - which is what your burning software should be doing for you
