trying to run it through a work proxy from your home connection? Or have you not put in correct proxy settings while using a work connection?

Whatever proxy you have set up is set to not show you anything.

    Generally it would be on..
    - The PC (eg. firewall)
    - Router
    - The ISP

Problem isn't with mozilla. Whats IE do? The same?

IE was working fine. i then connected to IOL rather that Eircom and like magic it is working so it's the ISP

    A quick google results in
    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=316699

I've seen this issue affect IE loads of times, generally reinstalling it or repairing it in XP resolves the issue.

I've never seen it happen to Firefox before...I take it you've done the simple stuff already
    reinstalled firefox etc?

Might be worth removing firefox...backup then delete the profile directory and if their's still a folder in Program Files get rid of that too.
    Then reinstall.

If all goes ok try restoring your FF profile and see if the problem comes back or if its fixed altogether.
