Registration will soon be introduced on the site. All site content will remain free, although there will be an option to purchase a PDF version of the newspaper. Jill O'Sullivan, site editor.

Grrr. Why do they have to put a wall between the readers and the paper ? They should be supplying rss feeds like the NYTimes does. There is growing pressure for the large American papers to drop this registration idea. What's the idea of having free registration ? I can understand charging a premium as a way of making money, but why put in a reg system if you're not going to charge ?

Aye - this is very off-putting.

    it's all about the marketing....
free registration gives them feedback on user profiles, and they use this to court potential advertisers for their website.
(The JNRS already give readership stats...)

I just buy the print copy anyway... only use online now and again for archive.

to combat these needless registrations use www.bugmenot.com
it'll give you a username/password for any non-fee-paying website that you need to reg onto
    great site!

I buy the print copy too but always reference the online version when I'm writing stuff on websites. It's a great shame for it to now be walled off. BugMeNot shows the futility of making people register. There are probably far more insightful ways to find out the habits of their online users besides registration details but I guess when they are relying on the wisdom of the dying ad trade then looking to future is out of the question.

As far as I'm concerned the Irish Times might as well have shutdown Ireland.com as its far too expensive....its a damn shame as I liked it as a Irish News source, certainly better then other places like rte.ie/news

Ireland.com had the oportunity to make a great community if they allowed comments about storys and expanded there comments on polls section.

    Down with registration!

They probably make their profit on Irish people or people with an interest in Ireland outside Ireland as that's the only way of accessing for them.

It is annoying though - I especially hate the way you might have paid for the print one but still can't quote a bit from the online version for say, a debate on boards.

Not so, go to eircom.net/news where you can find the IT, Indo, and Reuters. It's not the full paper, but it's something.

I think old news is kept on eircom’s webspace, but just not archived. I've found old IT stoires vie Goolge on eircom's servers before, but maybe old stuff is wiped every so often.
