I'm rather new to this business so all help would be much appreciated.
Here's an example from that Star a few weeks back, anyone care to help me make sense of it?

    16 (4) SERENE SUN (10)
    0/00-0 D Gillespie 4 8 4 K T O'Neill (10) -

    Here is what i know
    16=horses number
    (4)= ??
    SERENE SUN = horses name
    (10)=???
0/00-0=I know this indicates his finishing positions from this year and last, but anyone know what the slash means?
    D Gillespie=owner
4 8 4=I know 8 4 is something got to do with the weight the horse is carrying(jockey+saddle), i think 4 is the extra weight it's carrying as a hadicap?
    K T O'Neill=jockey
    (10) = ?
-=sometimes it has the horses top speed here.

I'd be very greatful for some replies. Thanks a million.

Not sure about either (4) or (10) but one of them is the horse's draw (stall he starts from)

    - (hyphen) usually means a change in racing seasons while / (slash) means that the horse missed a full season so the first zero would be unplaced from 3 yrs ago

4 8 4 = the first figure is the horse's age, the next two figures are horse's weight to carry in the race (in stones and pounds - there are 14lbs in a stone so horse is carrying 116lbs includes jockey, saddle, extra lead etc. its all inclusive

the last (10) is the jockey's claim i.e because of his inexperience he can claim 10lbs off horse's weight so actual weight carried is 106lbs

The '16' is the Saddle Cloth No - the 4 is the 'draw' - the stall from which he'll run.

The (10) is the number of days since its previous run
