    Hi,

First, in Outlook Express, make sure all the details of the accounts are correct (Tools -> Accounts). I would recommend re-typeing the username and passwords, if possible (these details are not required for sending email which explains why that is working).

Second, try Tools -> Options -> Connections (tab) and make sure those options are correct (ie. try unchecking "Ask before switching dial-up connections").

Also, make sure Outlook Express is not set to "Work Offline". This is not likely to be the problem but it's best to mention it anyway :)

    Hi,

Yes, try using this article to locate the Outlook Express "store" then deleting it...

I also looked up the exact error message and found the following links...

don't go deleting any files on your PC just yet.

does it happen straight away or after a while?

if it's straight away, it's most likely your AV software has messed up it's mail proxy settings and is blocking access from your messages.

if it's happening after a while, the most likely cause is a large attachment in your mailbox causing a timeout.

to check for the latter go to www.mail2web.com and check for a large attachment. you'll probably still be able to download it from mail2web via http which is much more tolerant of large files than pop/smtp (i.e. mail). then delete the message form thge mail server and try again.

if it's your AV software messing up it's email scanning features (the mail proxy thing i mentioned before) then try turning of email scanning and see if that fixes it. if it does then get on to your AV firm via email and get them to talk you through fixing it.

try avg free here.http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1. its much better than nortons and its not as big a resource hog. it also monitors your connection and when you go online it self updates.

a re-install won't fix it most of the time if it's norton av.

there's a thing called poproxy (navproxy on newer versions) that basically acts as a go between for your mail server and your mail program. this allows it to handle all mail safely and let norton scan it before it gets anywhere it can do damage.

[techy bit] the problem is that if it falls over (and it does a lot) your mail program can't see past it because it's programmed to collect mail from it, and it's basically shut up shop. you're mail program therefore thinks you're not connected to the internet and gives you that error. it can come in the form of 0x800CCCxx where 'xx' will be either 0C, 0D or 0E. they're basically timeout errors that let you know that there isn't a connection. it's the same errors you'd get if you weren't conneced to the net at all and tried to do a send/recv. [/techybit]

now if you call norton and ask them about it, their phone drones are programmed to make out liuke they have never heard of it and it's a very uncommon thing to happen, blah blah blah, but the truth is, I've been using NAV since the 2001 edition, and it wasn't new then, and they still can't fix it 4 years later.

from what I can tell, it's something to do with the timing of startup programs. I read somewhere if you create a shortcut for navproxy (or poproxy dep. on your version) and put it into your startup items, it can sometimes fix the problem, but I've not tried it. but i do know that re-installing doesn't work a lot of the time, but sure, it's probably worth a go anyways.

you could try just disabling scanning in NAV for outgoing mail, as it's more often the cause of the problem than the incoming mail. if that doesn't work then try the other stuff.

you'll most likely find stuff via google that will help.

Once again Vibe ur spot on- reinstall done no good except left me waiting for an hour to download updates. For the moment I have disabled email scanning on incoming mail, out going works fine, am I correct in interpeting what your saying is, NAV can work fine but once this starts its almost impossible to repair? Norton help & support was not much help went on about deleting temp folders, made shag all difference..Do you know if NAv 2005 is any better?

    Hi,

Personally, I would recommend Symantec Antivirus 9.0 Corporate Edition. I moved away from anything Norton a few years ago as each new version gets progressively worse. SAV 9.0 also uses a SMTP/POP proxy but this version actually works and I've had no problems.

Oh, SAV 9.0 does not require a subscription to use Live Update - virus def. updates are free.

Cheers I think I will be changing. I,m using Systemworks 2004 pro is it possible to remove anti virus but still use the rest of the suite?

    Hi,

Yes, when you try to un-install Norton Systemworks, the un-install programme should give you the option to remove/add components.

    er, it's the same thing.

    www.norton.com
    www.symantec.com

same company. same anti-virus engine & mail proxy under the bonnet of both apps.

whatever is stopping NAV working will very likely affect SAV corp. too.

incoming mail scans are the most important of the two, so you might want to think about switching to something else.

as a test, re-enable mail scanning and try looking for the navproxy.exe file and double clicking on it, and try a test send/recv and see if it works. if so, then you might be able to just stick a shortcut to it in your startup folder to make all this go away.

other than that, I'd go for AVG or something similar that's free and effective.

    Hi,

vibe666 - As I'm getting a little off-topic, all say is that they are very different products - try out SAV 9.0 when you get a chance, it's far more reliable than Symantec's "consumer" products.
