    Hi,

I was always told by my dentist I had good teeth and that I should look after them. BUt over the last say five or seven years I let my teeth go to rack and ruin. First I started brushing less and less, then stopped brushing altogether over the past few years.

I noticed a big buildup of tartar and receding gums behind my bottom front teeth and a few months later I reckoned I better go to the dentist. Theres lots of reasons I haven't go to the dentist in the last seven years, and the more I left it the more I got scared of going.

Anyway, I visited my estranged dentist two weeks ago and it turned out I needed three fillings (not sure if there are more on the way) and that I have gum disease. I think he's being really economical with the truth right now, not telling me exactly how much work I need but two of the caveties were really deep and I have some pretty deep plaque pockets around my back teeth and gum disease generally all around my mouth. I'm boooked in for a few more sessions with the dentist and hyginist. Looking up stuff about this on the web hasn't eased my mind - its made me more apprehensive. I probably need some kind of deep plaque removal and 'tooth planing' which apparently required a local anaesthetic.

I'm basically writing here to ask whether anyne else has experienced any of this, any of the symptoms and treatments, what I can expect, pain during and after the treatments. What have I got to worry about? A future of progressive periodontitis leading to eventually losing all my teeth? I'm getting more nervous and anxious and worked up the more think about it.
