Monitor Problem - Fujitsu Siemens PC

Just purchased a Fujitsu Siemens PC without a monitor as I already have one. Its an unbranded monitor and worked ok with my old pc.

As I boot up the PC it flashes the "XP" sign on screen but just as it's about to load up the desktop, the monitor shuts down...dead. All connections seem ok.

    Anyone any ideas? :(

Just to add to the earlier post it's not going completely dead, it's just shutting down to Standby. I can get into the settings before it shuts down if this might help?

Have you tried booting in Safe mode to see if you can spot a problem in Device Manager?

    Hi,

One possibility is that the new PC is trying to display a resolution or refresh rate that your old monitor does not support - this would explain why the monitor just goes into standby after seeing the XP start up logo.

To reset the display setting to something your old monitor will support, you must start Windows XP in VGA Mode or Safe Mode. To get this option...
To get into the Windows 2000 / XP Safe mode as the computer is booting press and hold your "F8 Key" which should bring up the "Windows Advanced Options Menu" as shown below. Use your arrow keys to move to "Enable VGA Mode" and press your Enter key.

Once you get into XP, try various resolutions and refresh rates. If it's an old non-brand monitor I wouldn't expect it to be able to handle high refresh rates so 75Hz might be okay. Do try 85Hz as it's the recommended default now (ie. better for your eyes too).
