What's the best method of going through yout boot log and finding out why a module failed to load?

I'm having a plugable USB problem in Gentoo, the usb.storage module is failing to load and I want to find out why.

    Just type dmesg

    It spits out /var/log/dmesg

Are you sure you have the correct driver for your usb controller loaded? Many a time I've installed usb-uhci instead of usb-ohci and vice versa.
