    Hi James,

its not unfortunate that your not a student to apply for the visa - Its actually easier than applying for the student one. All you need to do is check out the usit website and find out what date they are being released. Then you can either apply on line on the day or queue outside your nearest branch for a couple of hours.

I think you'll have to book your flights also and you'll probably have to show id etc - again check the usit site or give them a call.

any ideas on what part of canada you might be going to?

have you gone over with a working visa before???

    Sounds good.

I was actually born in canada and lived most of my life in Ireland so I have dual citizenship. But my girlfriend got one last year and we both came over last June, so we are getting ready to leave.

We actually queued at about 5 in the morning outside a usit in galway. We didn't really have to as other people came along at 9 and still got them. But we wanted to make sure we got one. Other people were queuing aswell we had a good laugh with them - some of which we are still in touch with.

cool, do you no how many visas are issued? im really praying that i get one. i think they are available in january.
the usit site is really unhelpful

I think there was about 1000 given out the year we got them. You should be able to get one no problem if your up for queuing, maybe give usit a ring and see what the story is.

The staff in the office in Galway were pretty sound - they took our email addresses and sent us a mail a couple of days before the visas were coming out

All the visa's for 2005 are gone, you'll have to try next year....think its january or february they get given out

Visas aren't given out at USIT offices anymore, they're avavilable online - usually in January/early February. So it's really a matter of just being lucky enogh to be able to access the website early enough (I think they went onsale at 8:00 this year, all gone within about 2-3 hours - but there were problems with people trying to access the site).
I think the queuing up outside USIT is a better way to do it - I missed out this year because the site just wouldn't load.

Hows it going. I was down this avenue myself there 2 years ago. We were supposed to be going to america but one of the lads, was under the drinking age so at the last minute we decided, to head to Toronto. Quality city, great night life and the poeple are among the soundest I've ever met. Now about your little predicament about visas. The year I was leaving for Canada, an agreement had just come into play, it was an agreement between the Irish and Canadian governments that would allow an Irish person to travel to Canada or vise versa, and work for a period of up to 9 months I think. I'm not too sure whatever happened this agreement, as i haven't heard anything of it since when I went away. But your best bet is to get in touch with the Canadian embassy down beseide lower Leeson Street. They have limited opening hours, but are fairly helpful. Ask them about this agreement which the 2 governments have signed. I was very lucky as I knew somebody who worked in the Embassy, and I had travelled to canada, and then received my temporary visa.
I wouldnt worry too much about not having a visa, loads of foreigners are over there, without visas, and ye could prob get away doing some labouring or waiting jobs.
Damn I wish I was going back myself.

    Hey,
Ive just been reading the posts here. ARe you guys saying that you can get a visa for working in Canada without being a student?
I went to Toronto for a year in 2002 on a student 1 year visa and absolutely loved it. I definitely want to go back and I researched in as soon as i got back in Jan 03. As far as i remember, i wasnt able to get one again - because i wasnt a student anymore.
Do you know if you can get the USIT one if you've had it before? Is this non-student thing new?

as far as i'm aware you can only get the student canadian usit once, so its not the same students going each year.

But i wouldnt be a student now - do you think i could apply for the regular visa ?

Yes, USIT do non-student work and travel visas - they're pretty similar to the student ones. Details should be somewhere on the USIT website.
