Why might I be being blocked from a site?

I'm a regular user of a major site but for the last 24 hours when I log on I get
the connection was refused when attempting to contact (name of site) "
I can not understand why this is. A few facts:

It happens when I use both Firefox and Explorer
It happens if I use another PC on the same wireless LAN.
The site is accessible if I go through an anonymizer.

Am I correct in assuming this can only be explained on the basis that the site in question has blocked my IP address? Could there be another reason?

Why might this have happened to me? I keep my Norton Internet Security pretty up to date. And no! before you ask, I have not knowingly been doing anything that could possibly have upset the sites owners!

    Any advice would be welcome.

Seems likely alright, could another user on you wireless lan have done something to upset them ? It's also possible your ISP has decided to block them if they're of dubious legality, altough I've never heard of an Irish ISP doing this, and I'm sure there'd be uproar if they did. Unless it was a kidde porn site or something and I think it's safe to assume you're not going to post up here asking why you can't access a kiddie porn site.

It wouldn't be this site by any chance ?

That can also happen when the site is having problems and has blocked ports/requests while it is being sorted.

It might be under some sort of DOS attack or just receiving too many requests. Many sites protect themselves when they receive too many requests by limiting access for a period.

Can the site be reached by other computers ?

Err no its not this site stevnemu! :p

It's a totally bona-fide site though - no way my ISP would have blocked it.

I had not thought of the wireless lan thing - it's probably not as secure as it ought to be.

How could I check if someone has been sitting on my lan? What could they have been doing to upset a third party so much as to block the IP address?

Shane, yes the site can be seen from other computers - and even by me if I use an anonymizer - that's why I think it is something personal....

I forgot to mention that if you don't have static IP, maybe someone who previously had the IP you currently have got banned, when you IP address gets renewed you may be able to access the site, restarting your router/modem may help this.
