Seen it before, but its always interesting. Its nice to see PNG finally get fully supported, and the integrated RSS reader and tabbed browsing are obviously there to pull people back from Firefox/Opera. The possible integration with Anti-Spyware is interesting in concept, but I would need to see more details on it to be fully convinced that its anything substantial. As for CSS support, what they really need is a proper DOM implementation that doesn't allow for the dirty hacks that designers have become accustomed to having to implement, and finally become fully standards compliant. Unfortunatly, I don't see this happening.

What I really hope they decide to do with IE7 is educate people more, make them understand why these new measures are in place in a way that most people will grasp. Right now a lot of the details are still tucked away in the KB, and not a lot of people are likely to casually browse those, tbh.

    firefox 4eva!

**** ms tbh. they're most likely only releasing this because of the threat of market loss due to more secure browsers such as firefox. this update has been needed for far to long now.

No, really, can we have one thread where this type of crap doesn't appear?

Such is the nature of competition. Can you think of a better reason? Microsoft got lax after releasing IE6, and now they know it. Now that Mozilla have gotten a decent foot in the door reputation wise as both a developer and a product, its time something was done so the same doesn't befall Firefox. Competition will be good for both products.

I'd rather take my chances on firefox than on IE anyday of the year.

well excuse me for not respecting a company that only bothers fixing its product when they feel threatened by a competitor.

What everyone else said: They developed IE into a good product...and then basically stopped development once Netscape went under. Firefox comes out, starts gaining ground and they suddenly kick-start developlment again.

I have no idea where this silly annoying firefox allegance comes from.

I want to use the best products available and those which suit my particular needs. If IE7 is better than my current browser, Ill use it. Simple as that.

I dont enjoy browser wars, its pretty anal if you ask me.

PS.- I dont use firefox, I use Avant [www.avantbrpwser.com], which is fully customisable and allows me to see more of the webpage than firefox. It is based around the IE engine and Ive had no major security problems. Firefox is kool, but I prefer to see more of the webpage, design my own skins and generally have more options.

So you flame us for being loyal to a browser while saying you're loyal to IE?

Too right. I use Opera for one specific reason (open in background window), no idea if it's supported in other browsers yet but I'd happily change if I felt like it. Either to Firefox or IE, both are installed on the machine anyway.

firefox's open in background tab feature is handeh.

Middle click? How very Flight Simulator. I tend to prefer just using the mouse rather than holding down ctrl as well (unless there's a more modern way of middle clicking on a trackball or regular rodent I'm not aware of) but good for them to include the feature.

Yes, I use a trackball (where I sue a mouse at all, which is seldom except on the web). Haven't used a real mouse in years (where I'm stuck on someone else's PC with an evil mouse I use nothing but keyboard, even on boards). You can all laugh now

    lol @ the trackballer

my mouse wheel is pressable as a middle button

To be fair he's not saying he's loyal to IE in fact he's saying the opposite, he’s loyal the what ever is the best browser in he's opinion, which is a good point

maybe some one should start a poll to see how many firefox/opera /other browser users would switch back to IE in Ms got the finger out and actually used some of there massive resources to develop a quality browser that was superior in every way to firefox/opera and any other browser on the market.

Would be interested to know what people thought.

Tried Firefox and mozilla but just never liked them. To many sites I visit were acting up so back to IE I went :)

I will use the browser that fits my needs best and brand loyalty to ANY COMPANY is for retards.

    - no- like jessy said- Im not loyal to any browser- that would be pretty stupid wouldnt it.

"yeah long live Firefox, down with internet explorer" hahah silly. :)

Theres nothing stopping people from having multiple browsers, but I suppose most people will settle on one.

I can see the appeal for firefox- its a kool browser, with a kool image. But come on now, youre not gonna go round with a T-shirt on promoting a browser. Are you??!! :D

I wish I knew why more people dont try Avant and Opera, both very kool browsers in their own rights. :)

Either way though, people are taking Firefox far too seriously. Firefox is no big secret anymore and there were other tabbed browsers before firefox and still are plenty to choose from. Most of which do a great job of ..eh.. displaying web pages. ;)

Im looking forward to trying IE7. :p

ps- if anyone is interested in avant browser there is a screensh0t attached which illustrates how it can be customised to look lovely and compact. 2 bars instead of 3. :)

Why? I'm loyal to Firefox/Mozilla. For one: it works as is no matter what OS I'm running. What other browser does this? Its nice to have consistency across OSes.
    womama wrote:

Long live quickly fixed exploits and close-to standards compliance. Down with exploit-ridden tied-to-the-core-of-the-OS browsers. Down with lack of standards.

Both are non-free and non-cross-browser (although Opera does try). However if Opera as a company goes down the tubes so does your browser. Firefox / Mozilla is Open Source. The code will always be freely available for willing hackers to develop and keep up to date.

Either way though you, sir, are a Microsoft fanboy. "No big secret"? WTF are you smoking? Why do 90% of people on the web continue to use a browser that actively lets your computer be infested by malware? Do they enjoy it?

I'm not. Another broken browser to support and find hacks around because Microsoft couldnt be arsed to do the job right and support existing agreed-upon standards.

if something the same as firefox came along, but for instance was twice as fast, would you then be loyal to firefox?

As people say, brand loyalty to a company is stupid. With IE Microsoft didn't have anyone to compete with, so didn't do more to the browser other than the odd security fix, whereas now they have something to compete against, they are going to try and make their browser better and more secure. Imagine the cpu market without AMD for example, we'd probably just have gotten a 2ghz p4 and it would cost $1500.

Standards wise, if you have 90% of the market, your product becomes the de facto standard, and it really then becomes up to other people to be compliant with you, whether liked or not. Like mp3's are not the best possible format to be using for audio, but everyone uses it, so it becomes the standard.

They don't (at least not directly in IE's case).

FF is an open source project developed by the Mozilla community for fun and glory, not for profit.

IE gave several indirect benefits to Microsoft - it was an enabler for Microsoft technologies such as ActiveX (people bought Visual Studio to develop for), it gave added functionality to Windows that you otherwise had to buy from Netscape, it was an engine they could sell to AOL, and it put them in the driving seat to control web technologies.

The only reasons I can think of for a free IE7 at this time are
    • They started developing IE7 for Longhorn anyway and could use some free publicity
    • They need a new platform for some DRM or Passport-like technology they have waiting in the wings
    • It reflects badly on Microsoft when the public sees a Microsoft product substantially outclassed by an open source solution.

Hostyle my friend, firstly Avant is completely free url]www.avantbrowser.com[/url. - I accept your point about firefox being cross browser, but I use XP and Avant is suitable for my needs.

Secondly, Im not a "microsoft fanboy" whatever that is, I was just trying to make a point about choosing the software which suits me. Right now, if I used a mac I would probably use Firefox. Why do people keep thinking when I say I prefer to choose what suits me, means I like IE?? I dont like IE, I think the interface is muck.

Im not "smoking" anything. Firefox is a hugely successfull browser and, in my opinion, no big secret. 10% is a huge amount of people and is most likely an underestimate in the Westwern world.
Firefoxs estimated portion of the browser market is continously growing at a fast rate, deservedly so, its a great browser.

Finally, this thread was about IE7, and I maintain my view that if Microsoft made a superior browser, I would use it, wether that would make me a "microsoft fanboy" or not.

If I could get Firefox to function with the buttons on the same bar as File and Edit, thus cutting it down to 2 top bars, as I have configured Avant to do [see attached pic in my previous post] I would use Firefox. But right now it takes up too much room for my 15" monitor.

Im just trying to share my view so please dont be so hard on me.

Thats not the browsers fault - its down to the website author for not creating a site that's compatible with all browsers.

I'm a firefoxian myself, and even if IE was an exact copy of FireFox, I wouldn't go back.
