Whats the story with people watching football matches and giving a blow by blow text "commentary" on boards.ie. Are they all looking for jobs with Aertel?

Lots of people work in the evenings, and enjoy the play-by-play account given by fellow boardsies

Not all are watching it live, some listening on radio, or watching via web stream.

    Its been happening for years

If people are working fair enough, i'm quite partial to the BBC text commentary myself, when working on a saturday. But it is clear from some peoples comments that they are watching the match live and giving their own commentary at the same time. It just strikes me as a bit strange.

I used to think it was a bit weird too (kinda still do tbh! especially when somebody is watching it at home while giving commentary!) but after having to work late on quite a few occasions I've found that it does come in handy when you ask a specific question about what's happening rather than just reading on-line commentary that isn't interactive.

You know I was thinking the exact same thing while watching the match last night. There where people sitting watching the match while commentating on it. I tend to watch the match with friends so I can comment to them but if I was on my own the last thing that I'd wanna do is sit typing while trying to enjoy the game.

I don't want to offend anyone who does this, just kinda curious as to why its done.

No it's sadly true. He leaves us there holding his pint while he legs it down the road. Now in mitigation he lives 30 yrds down the road but we do give him stick for it. But he's known as WWM for a reason. And plenty of boardsies enjoy the service. I really enjoy mornings like today where I relive the match having watched it the night before.

Maybe posting helped keep them awake. ;)

    I for one, love it.

I'm often stuck in work til ten at night, and appreciate it when people who I am familiar with (only through the soccer forum) post during matches, with live updates, as it were.

Twice this week for instance, it has helped me. On monday night there was a match that did not interest a whole loot of people, however I was kept in touch by a fellow boardsie member, who wouldn't know me from Adam. He PM'd me his phone number so I could get in touch with him while he was in the pub, in a completely different City. While, it's not what the OP is about, I just thought I'd mention this, as it is a kind of extension of the OP.

Then on Tues night, during the trouble in Milan, I was kept up to date by the various posters.

Myself, when I can, will pop in to the soccer forum at half time and full time in the games to offer opinion and discuss the match. Thankfully, the dark days of old (see my sig) seem to be behind us.

Did you sign onto boards just to ask this question or would you be a regular user hiding behind a new user name?

just a new user. I would have posted it on the soccer forum but the restrictions on that prevented me. I've been looking at boards for a while now due to not being busy in work most of the time. I mostly just read others posts. However this particular practice of "live commentary" struck me as most strange. I still cant get my head around it. It all sounds far too charitable for my liking. Maybe Oxfam would think of integrating it into their various services. Then they could provide the third world population with constant updates to matches they might never get to see. It looks like they would have no shortage of volunteers. Bizarre.

Ah, we soccer heads are just a friendly bunch of people. Most of the time anyway.

What do you expect, people who have access to a TV and t'internet not to post during the game?

I can't get my head around that. ;)

It's true, I've had a secret passion for muppet for years now... ;)

I think it just comes down to the fact that a lot of people enjoy sharing knowledge, any knowledge and does people in return enjoy the acknowledgment they get for that generosity.

There you go, summed up and packaged with a nice little ribbon on top.
