A DUP councillor from Belfast has complained about the inclusion of the word 'Irish' in the name of the British and Irish Lions rugby team.

Nelson McCausland said he had written to the rugby authorities to express his unease at what he described as "political correctness run amok".

He said the team had for decades been known as the British Lions, but the name appeared to have changed in recent years to include the word 'Irish'.

He said the team was drawn from the British Isles and should be known only as the British Lions, despite the fact that 11 of this year's squad are Irishmen.

in a word. Fúck right off. In more words. You absolute knob.

    what an unmitigated gobbler.

Profanaties aside. Typical. 1/4 of the team is Irish. Like all brits take credit when it's an irish wo/man winning they're a british athlete.

    to summise, go suck it.

that was my thought when i read that earlier on, what a knob for thinking that.Does he not realise we have 11 players in the panel, not one from Ulster and the rest are proper IRISHMEN.
Hes a knob just trying to get some press.

I would like to object to that statement. I am british and have lived in Ireland for about 10 years and before that in the UK for about 10 years and have only ever heard of "brits" taken credit on a couple of occasions due to ill informed stupid TV presenters. "Brits" on the whole do not take credit like you say.

The guy you qutoted is indeed a knob for trying to take the Irish away from the British and Irish Lions team name. but dont lable all "Brits" the same :)

You're right I will clarify. It is TV presenters, but they're hardly illinformed looking at an Irish singlet cross the line and somehow confusing the nation it they're doing well.

But of course this doesn't reflect on the populace general. I got carried away by my irritation with the afforementioned arse.

Pure Ignorance. The name British Lions dosen't solely suggest the team is from the British isles, it also suggests the team is solely Brittish by nationality. More worryingly galwaydude, does he not realise that we are not infact British? And the typical Irish man would take offence to an insinuation that we are (the reason "Irish" is now included in the name).

Rightly pointed out, a third of the team is Irish, and by right, we should be included in the name. (even if 0 players we're Irish in the squad, the fact we are one of the members who are considerd for contention warrents our name in the title)

Not typicaly Brittish i agree, but typical Northan Irish politics (both republican and unionist) to completely loose sight of the big picture, and to have the most mundane, irrelivant, childish bickering just to get one up over the opposite side, and any way you can hurt their pride, and step on there dignity makes your side feel big and more important.

I'm off to the politics forum to slate Gerry Adams, Bitch about Stuborn unionists and get banned from boards :D

I've never understood why they aren't just called the Lions...as a blow-in I do cringe when I hear some media hack mistake/mis-identify/steal an Irishmans nationality. Mind you I also raise my hackles when someone is claimed as Irish when he/she isnt.

    Mike.

He's an idiot, but "councillor from Belfast" already covered that in the OP. (Party name deliberately left out - it's across the board as far as I can see).

Anyone got anything construct to add here? Locking in 5.

TBH i do find the moniker "British and Irish Lions" clumsy....but i admit i get mighty pissed off when the Irish bit isn't mentioned.

I reckon the idea of just calling them Lions is ideal....that's all we called them when we supportered them against those cheating, bad sportman, whinging Australians.....

As for the belfast ****wit...well it just sums up Norn Iron really doesn't it....don't get me started on Davy Tweed..... :(

EDIT: Looks like it wasn't locked Al....hope this is considered constructive ;)

I think the original name was British Lions, they started back when we part of the UK? It's only fair that the name changed. Times change. As Sir Clive pointed out, once the squad is formed the players cease to become English, Scottish, Welsh or Irish. They are Lions!.
Is the Great Britian Rugby League Team (aka the Lions) called Great Britian & Ireland? I know there's an Irish player on that team (Brian Carney).

As for that twat, I'd don't even bother anymore. Those bigots in the north will use any small petty thing to try and undermine the otherside. it's sickens me really.
Best of Luck to Tyrone Howe!

  • i reckon that they should change the triple-crown to the "british Crown" too while they're at it, since we're apparantely british now too?

aren't we all playing into the hands of the politician that wanted the name changed by being upset by this?

You can call them what you want I just want to see them beat the Kiwi's!

or when the DUP said that tyrone putting up flags and bunting before the all ireland was "intimadating", haha poor guys must be very sensitive, we should just treat everything they say as a joke and not even bother rising to the bait

    Like an irish comedian once said - When the orange men come marching in nationalist areas;

The nationalists shouldnt protest, or shout abuse or riot

They should join in, march along and enjoy the nice music - that would really freak them out. Imagine them looking back and seeing a sea of green marching along with them. They wouldnt know what the **** was going on.

It's funny how people are going on about how it has to be kept to be respectful to the Irish people on the team but we regularly get threads on this board with people upset about Ireland's Call being played at our internationals.

It seems people only want to be inclusive when it suits them.

More succinctly, it's a load of bull.
