Custom String Sets

    Lo all,

Anyone got any idea where I can get a set of custom strings from - some place where I can specify the guage of each string?

    For electric guitar.

Basically a set of .12's with and unwound G would be OK.

There are plenty of sets of .12's around but they all have wound G's which feel yuck to bend.
I been using XL's since the beginning of time but I cant find the above on the dadarrio website. Same for all the big name string manufacturers.

Addicted to chunky strings these days

Ernie Ball has their Not Even Slinkys. Think they're 12's with a plain G.

Yup, I have a few sets of them, you can get them in Musician. Persoanlly I think the wound G sounds better than a huge plain G but there ya go :)

But wound G strings can get a bit sore

Yeah but the plain ones don't ring right, they sound a little off. Good tone, man.

    Cheers lads,

Yup, 3rd is 24P , I assume the P is for plain. Will give em a try.
Ive asked in a few shops about plain G's and just get flatwounds suggested normally (??)

I suppose its a matter of taste/prefrence and how you like a string to feel under
your fingers. One mans meat and all that.

Ive noticed a few guys here use .7's, I mean that would be beyond yuk for me!

I'm down half a step usully and have started plucking (well ,yanking ) the B+E a fair bit with my index and mid fingers. It hurts but I love it:)

yup, the tone is fab, do have to jack up the action some though.
Also cut down on the string breakage loads, thank Vishna

    Thanks agian

    Tone? I use EMG's. I don't have tone :p

It always surprises me how people can break so many strings. They must pound the crap out of them. And 46-9's are my string of choice these days :)

I have a tendency to be heavy handed but I cant help it :(
if I conciously try not to pick /pluck it makes me think about what I'm doing and when I think about what Im doing it dont feel right - if you get me?

I think some guitars are more prone to string breakage. My plank consistantly breaks Hi E on the bridge saddle, Ive greased it and the nut up but it will still happen after maybe 2+ hours worth of playing.
Its a well set up guitar and everythings been measurd to the .nth degree.
Since I started yanking strings it happens more. Worth it though.
I can get through a set farliy confadently if the strings are fresh though.

EMG's? Back in the day when I was a whipper snapper I loved those p/u's
Monsters and the sustain is mad. I used to have a strat with Active EMG's, can remember the model.
Getting old. Gonna fit some Dog Ear P90's when I get me some dough

    Those big incramental bends man....

Thinking about getting some second hand EMG's to throw into my strat actually. €100 or so for the whole set plus pickguard...

you do have to kit out the whole thing though as having an EMG together with stock single coils is not very 'balanced' to say the least!!
I rememer when I used to switch pick ups on the strat to the neck it was like turning the amp down a few steps!
EMG's rock and they do give you 'that' tone. Personally though I found them to be a bit cold/sterile sometimes (i'm not nocking your taste at all, they are top class pick ups)

A good way to Nitro boost any plank though!!!

Aye, I know about the mixing of passive and active. It can be done but you need one meg pots on the passive pickups (at least, I think it's on the passives )

EMG's are great for some things but I'm starting to like passives again, since I finally got a good set of them in my SZ.

yup, active EMG not to great for Jazz but then agian P90's would struggle with a Metallica cover.
What I really want is one of each guitar (all of em).......

Well, it wouldn't make sense the other way around. :)

I can never remember which is which though. Do actives have a higher or lower resistance than passives?

I have a bit of a nasty habit of beating the crap out of my guitar. I make a lot of noise :), but the first string(s) that seem to break on me through time are the low E's and teh A string. After a month or so, either one tends to uncoil by the bridge.

It's really irritating as it tends to just hang there and get in the way, making it difficult to finish off a song.

Oooo and a pristine wit to boot......

    Oeneus

I improved the situation (but not remedied it) by making sure the guitar is set up correctly (get a tuner, feeler guage and a steel ruler) using heavier strings, greesing the nut and the bridge with light greese,
Make sure the strings can move comfertabley over the nut i.e there strings aint squeezed into the slots, use a nail file to smooth the nut and remove and sticky out platic bits. You can recut a graphite nut if thats where the stings are breaking, I heard that helps.
Also I change my strings every 14 days ish.
If you are playing reguarly the Im not suprised if they break after a month, fact of life Im afraid.
I tune down half a step but I know this is not appropriate for a lot of peeps.
    A bit less tension helps.

Ive been told by folks 'well just dont play as hard' but thats a cop out, tell that to Steve Ray Vaughan (if he waz still about, sniff)

I am also pimping Psychotogen and Coprofago at the moment for anyone into some quality technical Metal :D

Oh yes, and Aghora too :D

For anyone who is sensitive about their lack of technique, avoid the Aghora link ;)
