    haha dell want you to return it. Typical, being awkward.

    Is this a Windows 98 System? or are you getting mixed up with System in System/Config error on bootup thats on NT (XP,2000) machines?

    Ok these are off top of my head so if they don't work you may want to try searching net.

    Place the Windows XP Setup CD In CD ROM when booting PC and boot into PC. It will say "Press any key to boot cd..", if you don't see this before windows loads then its not set to boot from CDROM. Look in bios (by pressing F2,DEL [wat every key it says to start setup]) It will be called boot sequence or something in there. Change to ATAPI 1, or CDROM0, you'll know yourself.

    After pressing any key to boot cd it will load a few basic drivers and stuff, after 2 minutes you will meet a welcome screen.

    -> PRESS R To enter repair console
    You will be prompted to choose your windows Installation, it should be 0 or 1 by default i can't remember off my head. Press 0 or 1 and hit enter.
    It will prompt you to enter admin password, leave blank if none, enter if there is.

    It should be now C:\windows32> or what ever your windows directory is.

    Type -> 'CD system32\config' and hit enter. (Don't include ' 's)

    Type -> 'Ren system system.crap' and hit enter (Renames the system file to .crap ext.)

    Type -> ' CD .. ' and hit enter
    Type -> ' CD .. ' again and hit enter.

    You should now be at C:\Windows32\> again

    Type -> ' CD repair ' and hit enter
    Type -> ' copy SYSTEM C:\Windows32\system32\config\SYSTEM ' and hit enter

    Type -> 'chkdsk /p' (might as well do a scan)

    Type -> ' exit ' (computer should now restart, while it is take out CD)

    and tada windows should start again though i must tell you that you may have to reinstall a few drivers like Printers, Modem etc.

    Hope this helps. This may be inaccurate but probably will work. Don't include inverted commas when typeing command and Where I have Windows32 you should have your windows directory which you will see as first line in the console when you hit your windows installation. It's probably Windows32 though as i guess by your last post.

    Tell me if it doesn't work, in that you've only restored one system file, SYSTEM, which is the one thats probably currupt, tell me if windows doesn't boot.

    Have fun -
