St. Petersburg and Moscow, Russia

Has anyone been St Petersburg and Moscow in Russia?

What did you think of it? I am thinking of going to either St Petersburg or Moscow in a few months time. They both look like lovely cities full of culture and history and I want to experience that.

I have read opinions on Russia from people from other countries, but I just wanted to get an opinion from an Irish point of view. Are they as racist as some make them out to be? Or is that an exaggeration?

Also, I hear they refer to us all as "British" or "English" since we are all from the British Isles, as its all the same to them. Is that true, anyone know?

Is it safe for a woman to travel there?

I would be interested to hear your experiences, thanks.

Moscow is very nice - it's probably the nicest city I've ever been to. It's very civilised and safe. There are lot's of beautiful places to see and it's very cultural.

    Moscow is a lovely city.
    Not very tourist friendly though.
Get yerself an underground map before going.
Don't miss Lenin's tomb in Red Square.
It has restrictive opening hours, so get there early.

St Petersburg is the pre-Communist Russia of the Tsars and would be most rewarding to someone who knows Russian history and literature well. Of course it's very impressive, especially The Hermitage, but it's not a very vibrant city.

Moscow is very much the Russia of today and all the more interesting for that. It also has all the icons of the Soviet Union that were so familiar to us - Red Square, the Kremlin, Lenin's tomb, the Bolshoi... You can see the Stalinist architecture and other remnants of that terrible era (like police chief Beria's home that young women were afraid to walk past for fear of being abducted). I think it's endlessly fascinating and if you have to choose one city, that's the one to go for.
