    Hi there,
I am going to Italy in Sept and have a yearning to go to Pompeii, I'll be in Naples for two days before I have to get a boat to Sicily - going to a wedding - does anyone know if there is a boat from Pompeii to Sicily or do I have to go back to Naples to get there?

    Any help appreciated!

    Simon.

Pompeii isnt actually on the coast, I don't think! Also it's really near to Naples and Sorrento!

Don't really know much about the boat thing sorry! It def is near Sorrento - we stayed at tha Amalfi Coast - positano, which is an area you do not want to miss if you are around that area - it is fabulous and only a boats ride away from Capri -which is not as exciting as The Amalfi Coast itself although some of the views from the boat are fantastic. We stayed in Positano and got a bus and train to Pompeii - which is fantastic - except I couldn't stick the 40 degree heat with very little shelter for that long (that was in September!).

Positano was fabulous it is like a village/ town on a hillside at the coast that spirals downwards - there are stairs the whole way down to the coast! They nearly killed me walking back up as our hostel was at the very top! But the memories of sitting looking at the view of the coast with the songs of a swing band from down below is something which will remain with me forever. God think I am getting a bit over sentimental there. Anyway I rambling a bit now - the point is, is that it is fab!

hey the train journey from Pompeii to Naples is under an hour iirc so it shouldn't be a problem. I camped in Pompeii and would highly recommed taking your time discovering the place it's beautiful. Went to Capri from Naples, but it's a shorter journey from Sorrento. Loved it and the Blue Grotto is amazing. Naples itself was not worth spending much time in imo, but each to their own! Have a nice trip!

Like everyone said. I was the when I was 13 or something, we went on a family driving holiday through Italy and Dad and I went on a DAY TRIP to Pompeii from the beaches south-west of Rome! Bypassed Naples and it definitely wasn't much more than a hour past the place. Easily driveable or bussable.

If you're into all that history stuff - I was obsessed with Classical to Renaissance history at the time - it'll be one of the best times of your life. Shame you're not going to be around Rome because Ostia is meant to be amazing. And don't forget that Herculaneum is near Pompeii, too.

I was there at roughly the same time last year, in the same area. The only difference is that we took the "metro del mare" boats. One runs from Positano to near Pompeii and then a shuttle bus takes you the rest of the way. The cost was €4 each way, and in that heat it was a lot better than being crammed into one of those overcrowded buses!
