The Dell Inspiron 9300 for me:

    €1,746.42

    Intel ®Pentium ®M Processor 740 (1.73 GHz, 2 MB L2 cache, 533 MHz FSB)
    1024MB 533MHz DDR2 SDRAM (2x512)
    256MB NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Go graphics card, PCI-Express x16
    60GB (5.400rpm) IDE Hard Drive
Intel® ProWireless 2200 802.11b/g Mini PCI Wireless LAN Card
Fixed Internal 8X DVD+/-RW Drive with Software
    17" UltraSharp™ Wide Screen WUXGA (1920 x 1200) Display with TrueLife™

You will be hard pushed to find a better spec'd machine for that price. The screen is top notch, a gig of ram and a savage graphics card.

Dell's site is complete boll@x! the minute you click on customise the price jumps up approx 300 EURO, & that's all across the board.

I think the above price is probably ex-VAT, if not then they are quilty of false advertising

The price jumps up €350.89. Thats because the price before you click on "customise" includes "1 Year European Collect and Return Service".
When you then click "customise", it automatically updates it to
"Basic Package: 3 Year Int. Next Business Day onsite support & 30 day Online MultiMedia Training".
Just select the "1 Year European Collect and Return Service" and it will knock €350.89 off the price....

It would certainly be a good alternative to the Dell system I suggested.. Problem with the laptop you suggested is the size (thickness), the power consumption needed for the 3.4GHz P4 and the heat it generates. It basically looks like it is the Chevo units that Alienware and Sager use. It is also the same spec. All in all, you will probably get about 30 mins battery like, it will get too hot to use on your lap and will weigh about 14 pounds.

One of the big plus points is the new Pentium M used in the Dells. They perfrom at the same level as a 3GHz+ P4 but consume far less power allowing for far lower operating temperatures and increased battery life. The 9300 will easily break 2 hours running on the battery. It also only weighs about 8 pounds.

Kensutz, the price you are being quoted probably includes a 3 year warranty? What Zep is saying is bang on.

As for the comment regarding Dell being a rip off. To be honest, I couldnt give a **** whether they are normally a rip off or not. The 9300 is incredibly well priced and you will be hard pushed to find a comparitively spec'd laptop for a similar price.

It is all well and good criticising Dell but the criticism is not applicable in this case. Think you are just band wagon jumping to be honest.

    camn down there ted!
are you on commission from dell? maybe should remove your nose from their posterior :D

I'm not fussed, I went down to PC World to see what they have and I have to say nothing impressed me. I rang Elara to see when they'd have the Amilo 1630 in stock but not until May 11th which is probably too late for me. I must check Dell again and see what they have.

I wish... To be honest I am normally the first to tell people to look at alternatives to Dell but there is no denying that the 9300 in the above configuration represent massive value for money.

In fairness you were the one who opened with describing something as "complete boll@x!" while clearly not understanding why something is the way it is and how to sort it. Remove plank from eye first, then point out speck in the other guy's ocular jelly and we'll all be much happier, eh?
