Broadband offline

With all the announcements / tv ads about how simple it is to get broadband it may amaze people to hear that I can't get it in Tullamore.
Moved into a new housing estate rang eircom / esat for broadband and the advise I got was to go and campaign the neighbours to show interest in getting broadband. Seemingly Eircom are putting out remote switching units off the main exchange and the remote switching units can not be used for broadband.

Does anyone know of any alternatives.
