Any DivX encoding heads out there?

i'm new to DivX and would like to get other peoples experiences and preferences used for encoding DVD's to DivX.

Would you recommend encoding all DVD's in high quality and High Definition mode? Or would it be ok to shave a few MB's off and go for home theatre mode?
I suppose the answer depends on where you intend to view DivX files, i.e. PC or DivX compatible hardware.

What are people out there using - PC to view or burning to DVD for viewing on DVD player? Is it possible to burn DivX to CD and view on DivX compatible hardware player?

Does DivX select sensible default settings or is it worth modifying settings ? e.g. changing 16:9 to 4:3 which will look better on my telly!

What about framerates for video and audio? Which are probably best?

Alot of my DivX files have audio not correctly timed with the video. Has anybody else experienced this? I think virtualdub is the recommended fix for that but i got to go figure out how to use it.

Any other thoughts or recommendations to a DivX newbie?

Is DivX just another fad that has a limited shelf-life?

    cheers,
    bobo

Philips DVP 630 best machine ever ,plays 9 Divx movies on a DVD or one on a cd.

Does DivX select sensible default settings or is it worth modifying settings ? Depnds on your TV i go with WS as i have a WS tv.

What about framerates for video and audio?

Again TV and Media dependant , if its an NTSC disc then more fps than PAL, and if your TV can play it. Audio is same if you have AC3 decoder go with 5.1 if not scrap it.

thanks 4 d tips. i'm not encoding any NTSC (american??) DVD's just plain PAL.

Would avi's encoded at 30fps play ok on a PAL tv which if i remember correct is 25fps interlaced?
Would my de-interlaced avi's play back ok on a hardware divx supported dvd player?

Just encoded gladiator DVD to divx high quality, high definition and it took 3hrs 20 mins - is this normal on a P4 2.8GHz HT, 1GB RAM DDR2?

for a beginner autogk is a handy little tool. Although I wouldn't necessarily say that xvid is better than divx. For that matter WMV9 is also a contender.

Dr Divx is the DivX alternative to AutoGK - and as far as I can remember its quicker. I don't think WMV9 has an auto tool though.

    Agreed its the rizzle rizzle.
    Some very good utilities.

AutoGK would be the best way to start
but id say go all out and try the full
program gordian knot get the hang of
it DivX or Xivd it really dont matter
its a matter of what you like yourself.
Xvid to b honest seems to be the codec
of choice at the moment cant really remember
the last rls tha came out in Divx but hay its
    a matter of opinion.
As for WMV9 i aint ever used it so don really
know if its any good. what program do u use
    to encode to WMV9??
+ XviD is the fastest codec if u want a good
    encode job that is.

Xvid is a far superior codec to divx. Much better quality at the same size if you have the settings correct. Delete your old codec in add/remove programs and download the latest one.

i agree. beware that if you download autogknot there spyware included. make sure you are running a realtime antispyware program in the backround like microsoft antispyware.

Spyware included in AutoGordianKnot? From where did you download it? AutoGK is a spyware-free program.

ya AutoGK has spyware adaware wont pick it up
but spybot S&D sorts it out.

And i have to agree XviD is by far the best codec out there.

Are Xvid encoded files supported by DivX certified hardware? if not then it is pretty much useless to me.

Could anybody out there tell me why my DVD's (PAL) are getting encoded in Dr. DivX at 29.97fps? I thought it should be 25fps for my PAL tv??? can anybody shed light on this? Have i got it wrong?

Will PAL DVD's encoded to DivX at 29.97fps and certification 'High Definition' play back on a Philips 630 player which just states 'DivX capable'? I need to know what format to encode my DVD's to ensure compatibility and max quality.

    Ditch Dr.DivX Get Gordian Knot.....Much....Much....Better
Its a little tricky at first but its well worth it.
You don`t have to use the xvid codec stick wit divx
if u like xvid is a lot better but not that much.
    Gordian Knot Download Link

Why oh why do people still recommend WMV in this day and age? Is it just me or does everyone get stuttery video all the time with WMV? WMV files (on my hard-drive - not streamed) for absolutely no fathomable reason stutter all the time every time as if it was being streamed.

Im a bit of an xvid fanboy ok, but I think its DIV 3 that I have and ICE aGE rip of, and its uber high quality and only 700 M.

I have a xvid rip the same size using cvs and its not quite the same quality.
Vobs seem to be the rage now though , Im just grabbing vobs of everyihing.
Infact , Ive even come across some HDTV , and tis incredibly cool, although i'd almost have hoped that they would have gone for crazy hig res, like 2048 *, as it is its only 1024 * , still though, it is damn nice.
Big files though, I have a 380 Meg JPOP mpeg version, and its only 5 Mins long Oo
