    Need a bit of help,

Stuck a 160 GB drive into a mates machin. Put 2000 on it (it wont ake xp and i wont even attempt linux with this person)

Anywho it's only picking up 130GB and when he tries to run a couple of aps I'm getting warning messahes that the system is dangerously low on memory. I thinkin this is cause i didnt partition the drive but I'm not sure. I've tried upping the virtual memory aswell but this didnt halp.

Any suggestions would be mucho welcome

    Cheers

What are the specs of the machine, I'd hazard that it's a ram issue. What's the processor speed, motherboard etc.

There's 256 MB RAM which should be enough, it was workin fine with the old disk in it, I can get more ram if it's needed.

It's got an AMD Athlon XP2200 prcoessor which is 1.8GHz

The 127gb thing is an OS (or maybe BIOS, but I'd say OS) limitation. Upgrade to the latest service pack (sp4) for the OS to be able to see all of the drive. You'll need partition magic or the likes to be able to enlarge the current drive, as opposed to adding on another 30gb partition.

No idea on the memory thing.

I'll be honest, win 2000 on 256 Megs will struggle, especially if you're trying to run 4 or 5 apps.

What's the max page file size ? It should really be at least 512MB. I've also seen this error come up with certain applications when it really shouldn't. The office 97 shortcut bar used to cause this sometimes, and I think it might have carried over to later versions too, if he's using that get rid of it. I also think there may be an issue with the max number of handles the OS can use that results in this, I know that was mainly a Win9x prob but I think I've heard of it on 2k aswell.

edit: can't find anything on the handles problem being in win 2000. Do a virus check aswell just in case.
