A Dell Dimension of that age probably uses a non-standard PSU which means you might as well buy a new case too, , a 2GB processor won't fit in any motherboard that could handle a 200MHz chip either oh and you'd need new memory too.

What model is it (blue badge on front) because I'm guessing it's a Pentium / MMX

    basically, just dump it.

Ya its MMX alright with a big dog of a case. Just buying a new PC would prob be alot less hassle?

don't ring up dell or anything like that if you want a new pc, build one yourself, ALOT cheaper.

If you want it for web browsing and word and stuff thats fine
But if you want it for anything game related forget about it

The only thing you would be able to use from it are the hard/floppy/CD drives. Monitor might be worth keeping if it's a pristine 17"

Another option would be to pickup a PIII on the for sale thread for €100 or so.

It's down to your budget - you could buy a laptop for €600 , won't be fast but it would knock the socks of your MMX

thanks for the suggestions. not going the laptop route, PC is for my parents, they'd never use a laptop. Only reason i was thinking of upgrading it was that i could use up the case and the drives

Could i just fit this upgrade kit from Komplett into the case,

Would i have to upgrade or change anything else?

Wouldn't bother- it would mean having to change the motherboard, RAM etc and its not worth it. The cash you'd spend on a new board and RAM would be better spent on a decent second hand PC or better yet, splash out on something new that won't need upgrading for years!

its funny how alot of people associate a new case == new pc, but if they keep the case they are just upgrading, even if every bit inside is changed.

Anyway, no, you will NOT be able to use a pc case from 1996(maybe early 1997) with any modern components, from an ease of use point of view, being able to actually fit the parts in it (could well be an AT case...), as well as a heat point of view.

The only thing you could keep would be the floppy drive, maybe the cdrom if you're sadistic (probably an 8x). The monitor "might" be ok, but probably isn't, but a 17" crt is peanuts nowadays, and are ok, and a 17" LCD is relatively cheap as well (iiyama E435S is €289 and has a dvi connector).

Really you will need a whole new pc.
