I hate when they have MTV or something on. Grand for matches, but otherwise switch them off please.

    Thoughts?

I can't stand tv's in pubs, I don't mind the match on in pubs where people want that sort of thing, but any other television irritates me beyond belief. My favourite pub in Dublin is Grogans. No tv, no music, just a great buzz and good convo. Loads of artists display their work for sale there as well. There are also filthy looks flung if someone is shouting into their mobile obnoxiously.

Actually, that sounds pretty cool, does it have sound as well or is it just like Solas showing only the picture?

I think the tv is good for those awkwardly social people who have no one to talk to and don't want to look like a complete spare while enjoying a drink on their own.

At the same time though if you're on your own waiting for someone in a pub etc. then it's nice to have somewhere to direct your attention

Read the paper or a book or something. TV is such a conversation killer. And no matter what ya do, you cant help looking up at it. Thats the way TV content is designed, to suck your attention in. I really dont know why pub owners leave them on when there is no match on. And why would they leave on a music video channel, but not have the sound on for it? Whats the point in watching a music video that doesnt even go with the music that is playin in the pub!!? One of the main reasons of going to the pub is to get out and meet people and talk with people etc. Not to sit down and stare at the TV, you can do that at home.

The bad points definately out weight the good points.

on the flip side it discourages people from engaging in conversation with people they know or even strangers.

TV has already poisoned our homes dont' let it take our pubs.

On the whole I would be against TV in pubs with the exception of matches of course. They always seem to bring people close and sometimes too close.

I don't really pay attention to them unless the person trying to talk to me is completely dull, then I'm fully focused on them. I always manage to get that person who wants to share their life story with a total stranger while I'm waiting for someone to show. I think they're ok to have playing, it all depends on what they are showing. The volumes are usually too low for me to hear anyhow. But visually, I don't think they take anything away from the pub. I don't always have a book or magazine onhand.

Bah, you think TV's in pubs are bad... try going in for a meal in an Indian restaurant, everything fantastically decorated, then to have the whole atmosphere ruined by a blaring TV.
At least pipe in some Ravi Shenkar ;)

was in a club where they had dodgeball on a few screens, nice touch and had a laugh with a friend who was a fan of the film, but overall is was pointless since you had no idea what was going on in the film unless you had watched it before.

tv on in a pub when there is no sporting event/major news item is a bastard

the pub i go to most often has no tv at all, just music and its great
