VNC with Netopia Cayman 3341 USB

    Hi All,

Am trying to VNC to an uncle's PC who lives 100's of miles away to help him setup some stuff on his PC.

I have talked him through the setup of TightVNC on his PC, but every time that I try to connect, I get a connection refused.

Im fairley sure that the problem is the modem (Netopia 3341 USB) needs to be configured to open the VNC port on the machine. However, I am unable to explain to him how to do this becuase I am not familiar with this modem.

From looking at the Netopia user manual, it seems that you can configure the modem by navigating to http://192.168.1.254, but when he does this in his browser, it just sits there and eventually times out. Im pretty sure that the web config module is actually working, coz when I get him to telnet to port 80 on the same IP, it accepts the connection?!?!?!?....

Anyway, if anyone can help with the procedure (eg: has done this before with this modem), then I would appreciate some advise on the steps!

    Thanks,
    Jab

if it telnets ok, then the browser section is broken somehow, although you can set it up through telnet too, just a little bit trickier and less straightforward.

he could also allow remote telnet so you could connect, if thats an option for you

    Hi,

I have another suggestion. If TightVNC (or RealVNC) is installed on your uncles PC, it is possible for the "server" (your uncle) to connect the "client" (you).

To try this, get your uncle to right-lick on the VNC icon in the System Tray (bottom right hand corner of the screen) and click on "Add New Client". He should then type in the IP address of your PC. Please bear in mind, you need to have your TightVNC Viewer in "Listening Mode".

By the way, this assumes you have port forwarding setup on your PC (port 5800).

Cayman 3341 - Look for "Pinholes (Port Forwarding)"
    http://www.netopia.com/support/resources/option_3341.html

Also, although the default IP is supposed to be http://192.168.1.154 - try http://192.168.1.1 as well. And make sure the browser he's using is not set to use a proxy.

    Thanks for the reply.

Any chance you could give me detailed step-by-step instruction on how to configure the unit to allow me to telnet and configure?....

I have tried to do this over the phone, but unfortunatley, he is extremely computer illeterate!...as such, because I cannot see the screen, I simpy cannot manage to explain what to do!

If you could give me instructions like:
    1) telnet 192.168.1.254
    2) type XXX
    3) press enter
    etc..etc..

    That would be bril!
    Thanks,
