i think it illegal pretty everywhere in the world:)

Saw this programme on Adventure 1 yesterday, 4 guys from England go to canada(although it looks like the antartic) to do a few base jumps. 2 of em climp a huge cliff, approx 4000ft(3 Empire State Buildings), it takes them about 14 hours to climb, they didn't bring their tents or sleeping bags so they literally had no choice but to keep climbing or else die trying. Luckily they made it in time, just as the sun goes down they jump, they free fall for 27 seconds!!

14 hours to get there, 2 mins to get back - incredible ****! Mad Bastards!!!!!

Base Jumping of itself is not illegal per se however the trespass that is almost inevitable to reach exit points is.

The pursuit of new and better (and preferably legal) jump locations is a big obstacle in the sport. There are a number of great cliff spots though in France, Italy and Norway in particular and the fully legal organised 'bridge day' in the States was fun for a few years too.

Not a sport to get into without a significant amount of skydiving experience particularly zero-speed exits (balloon or helicopter jumps) and canopy control.

Base Jumping IN Ireland is difficult due to lack of suitable locations (height alone is not enough there are many more factors to be considered, there are a couple of places that are/were being studied) but there is a small group of base jumpers who travel abroad now and then.

Check out http://www.basejumper.org/ for a good intro to the UK community.
