The Taekwon Do club that was suggested to me in Cork, has its home at the SMA hall in Bishopstown, Cork City.

To my knowledge, its run by a guy called Mr. Dermot Walsh.
I know nothing about him or his club and I would like to get some information, especially about Mr. Walsh's abilities as a teacher.

I am aware of at least 6/7 other clubs in and around the city but, this was the one that was recommended to me. The inta website is very useful for getting info on clubs, but I think that Mr. Walsh's club is not ITF, but I could be wrong

I'd appreciate any information that anybody may have.

    Regards

Dermot was (and might still be) in TKDI (ITF style patterns). Which kinda broke into a grouping of different clubs instead of an association. But is still there!

I always thought Dermot was a sound guy and very technical.

Mark Leonard might be able to give you more information as he is still with TKDI.

But the choice is yours! Where are you living in Cork?

Have you done TKD before? Even if you haven't, the best thing is to turn up 3 or 4 times and find out for yourself.

I have never done TKD before.

I did a year of Kung-Fu in college, and really enjoyed it. However, the guys I was training with were all older and were more interested in the personal development and physical wellbeing - I wanted to quote the Matrix "I know Kung Fu!". On top of that, despite promises of grading, the instructor (who rarely turned up) talked about learning Kung Fu for Kung Fu's sake. If he was being sincere, I wouldn't have minded, I think he just lacked interest. I did find out afterwards that his g/f had just had a kid, so I guess his priorities were justifyably elsewhere. But he could have got us in contact with some other trainer in Cork.

    Rant Over.

I want to do TKD for three reasons:

    1. I want to get fit and strong again. Four years sitting behind a computer screen WILL result in a bit of a spread.

    2. I want to regain some of the self-confidence that doing Kung-Fu gave. I know now, that I knew Jack-Sh!t Kung-FU, but it was how I perceived myself that was gratifying.

    3. I want a structured, scheduled, planned program, that WILL be followed. I'm not a control freak, I just want to have some external discipline to draw from. Work and other concerns can defeat any man's best intentions (as has happened with EVERY gym regime I have ever attempted)

By the way, I'm in Glanmire.

    Jees,

and your gonna drag yourself all the way out to dermots class?

there's plenty of Martial Arts clubs between you and there?

loads in Mayfield (TKD - there me PTKD KT Hall and Noel Quinn Family Martial Arts (mainly kids he tells me) in the Sports centre).

you have the TKDI centre on pana over Burger King (Cyril Mc Sweeney - my old examiner! bloody brilliant man!)

if you want to go back to kung fu then John o'Riordan is your man, and he's in Douglas! I think one of his students has passed through here at one stage and i have a private mail from him i can give you his web name to contact him??

who told you to go all the way out to dermot? (not that it's not worth it!!) i'm just being a Mrs'Doyle again :D

There's also Alan Troy's TKD class in Glanmire Community College. And he likes fitness, as I learned when I trained with him over the summer. His details are on the INTA website

Am a Tipp man, but my instructor is a Cork man he takes classes during the week in a few locations in Cork, with Whitechurch being one area. If interested I can PM you with he's contact details, etc. He is a 4th Degree black belt with over 15 years experience, and is a former National team coach. He is a really great guy, and very patient with all he's students.

Also in Cork is Great Southern TKD, from whom my instructor originally trained/instructed under. Their website is www.gotogst.com

You really couldn't do better than Dermot Walsh for a coach. Dermot coached the TKDI Nationlal Team when I was trainign with it in 97-98 and I found him to be excellent. He was a world class fighter himself before he blew his cruciate and has lots to pass on. The best advice though is still to go along and see what you think of the vibe for yourself.

If you have never done TKD and have no vested interest in taking it up, you should really consider giving jiu Jitsu a go, Liam Beechinor teaches Base Jiu Jitsu in Douglas (I think), he posts on here and should be able to help you out. Definitley a good one for self confidence.

Mondays and Wednesdays 8pm till you drop :D (which is about 10pm)

If it's a place in Bishopstown you're looking for, there's a IUTF club in CIT. Not sure what the times are. I think it's Richard Beel whos instructing there now. Don't know what he's like as an instructor but he's a really good fighter and has had some success in full contact as well as TKD.
