I think this forum is appropriate for this. After the Leaving Cert, I would like to goto America to work for the summer. I'm not sure where abouts yet, but I was thinking somewhere around New York or California.
I know I need a work Visa, are these hard to get? How much money would I need to bring? I was thinking at least €600. Is it easy enough to find accomodation? Anything else I'd need to know?

    Thanks. :)

A J1 visa is pretty much the only kind of visa you would be applicable for as a student... but you need to be a third level student to apply for one.

Money - I'm planning on bringing over about $200 cash with me and having €1800 in a bank account with a credit card [€500 credit limit] and ATM card. I fully expect to use at least $1000 of it before I manage to get a job (I don't want to use it, but I'd say it'll take awhile to get a place to stay and an income).

I think the best option for you would maybe be to try working in europe untill your eligible for a J1. Only another year? Plus since the leaving cert usually goes into mid/end of June, it's a little late to be going over.

I completely agree with Bah who is doing it the very sensible way. You do not want to be in the States without money. The more "stand-by" money you have in a bank account and available on credit card the better.

600 euro is nowhere near enough if you are going out without a job or accomodation arranged before you go.

Talk to a students union rep in one of the universities.

But if you are doing the leaving, concentrate on that first. You have loads of time to do the states.

God I sound OLD. But I think it is good advice.
