apple have weak lcd screens, that have been known to crack in your pocket, and it costs 250euro to fix it. i would avoid ipods personally. the new sony hd5 really will be an ipod killer when its released in a few weeks, i would go with that personally. also 40 hour battery life on a removable battery :)

nokia LCDs crack in ur pocket if u sit on them, don't buy a nokia? :p

If u take care of it, ie dont sit on it, or leave it in your pocket with a screwdriver or something, that wont be a problem.

The 40G ipod is now history and has been replaced with a 20Gig 4th gen IPOD

The only 40G is the IPOD Photo.

The 20Gig is available in the 3G stores i think.

    .

seriously doubt it man, i have had loads of nokias and abused/ drop them and never broke anything. certain brands do break ie motorolas do break quite often, a quick google search or ebay would confirm this.

also hp ipaqs break all the time, known fault. ive dropped a palm tungsten t onto a concrete footpath from 4 foot and it survived 100%

ipod screens are very fragile for some reason, cracks have been known to appearwithout any abuse at all.

in anycase the new sony HD5 will be cheaper than an ipod and much more sophisticated with a better battery life by a factor of 2. buy the sony :D

Nope, the 4th gen iPods come in both 20GB and 40G, they came out last year sometime.

One reason for not going with the sony is iTunes because I find it to be one of the best apps to organise my music...

Another is that the sony won't work on a Mac either.

Other than that the sony is the way to go...

I recently bought a 20gb ipod in NYC and started playing around with it a bit as usual discarding all instructions!!! I've so far been frustrated to find that I cant (or at least cant figure out how) create playlists on the fly.

I previously had an old creative jukebox that could so I assumed this was a basic fcuking requirement for all mp3 players, was I mistaken? Can anyone tell me if it's possible to create playlists on the fly???

All Manuals are available on the apple website from memory you hold down the centre button button for a few seconds and the go to the on the go playlist then you save that and rename it what ever.

    Ipods suck

What a very constructive comment melekalikimaka.

@OP: I doubt people will know too far in advance about new models. Apple are usually very good at keeping new models under their hats until release time, or at least a couple of days of release time!

    Ipods suck

As do you...with your VERY constructive post

Anyway this thing about Ipod screens cracking its crap to be honest, I've seen many a Ipod get thrown around and the screens fine.
Well except for scratches on the outer cover but thats about it ;)

put ipod cracked lcd into google and look at the threads. i dont think it is crap, the ipods screen is exposed, the sonys is enclosed, make up your own mind but the new hd5 has twice the battery life, is almost half the weight and size of an ipod, looks better, has better sound quality, is 50 euro cheaper, has a user replaceable battery , a g shock sensor and a screen that auto flips and can be used in portrait mode. yes it wont work on mac but thats basically the only thing wrong.

It hids in your pocket or rucksack, who cares!
But i do agree it doesnt look very pretty, not that its ugly. I rather have a good player than one that looks pretty but isnt great

It wont play AAC encoded files that you might have ripped using Itunes.
It wont play Fairplay DRM tracks from Itunes.
It wont work on a Mac

All in all a great Ipod replacement

Apart from that its a grand player. You own sony shares right? In fact your basing your recommendation on reviews of a player that isnt even available over here yet.

    No,

the 40Gig was withdrawn in Feb and only available as the IPOD Photo.

i own an hd1 which is a fine machine which has the needed firmware upgrade done.

aac like atrac and fairplay and any other drm invested crap is exactly that crap. all your music should be in mp3, the universal format.

its coming out in a few weeks, amazon and a few others are listing it as is the dublin camera shop any more questions?

U are right sony has been ridiculously restrictive in the past and it should play windows media, ogg, and a few other formats but i dont expect it to play aac drm songs. my advice is stear clear of any drm music and rip and download all songs in mp3, insist on this, or in the future u will suffer.

Disagree totally - only use mp3 as a last resort over DRM'd crap.

Sound quality wise its obsolete. WMA, ATRAC, ACC and OGG are all far superior for the same bit rate.

Yes it might limit your choice of portable player but thats better than having to re-rip all your cd's sometime in the future.

imho its all marketing crap, i can hear absolutely no difference between variable bit rate 128 and cbr 128 atrac, absolutely none and thats with good earphones. i challange anyone who can differentiate between arac and mp3 at the same bit rate.
the reality is the lab tests show almost half of the people in a test think that 128 mp3 sounds better than 128 atrac, theres only a couple of percent difference and sony played on it. also they are using 400 euro headsets and top music reproduction equipment in a silent environment and alot of the people think mp3 is betterthan atrac? so its all a crock, mp3 is the gold standard, and vbr 128 at that.

Go with the proven market leaders ipod or iriver.

With regard to a screen cracking problem with ipods, well google anything you want and you`ll get some people complaining.

Also only use mp3 if you need alot of flexibility with your files.

Finally the 2nd gen ipod minis have up to 18 hours battery life compared to your 8 hour 3g :)

The 4g regular ipods have 12 hour battery life.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 347 ✭✭DirtyHarry

in all fairness iv backed up all my music in mp3 format iv about 20 dvds of music but when i upload any music into itunes i use a custom setting of there highest bit rate. Best quality...but bigger file size than mp3.

why all my dvds are in mp3 is that i can then play them in dvd players (ones hooked up to tvs and the sort, handy at parties when the battery goes on my ipod using my iTrip. Plus is the universal format really. Not the best and thats by far.

the mini ipods are a good idea but i need capacity and 4gig or 6gig is just not enough.

as for the new battery...thats about the only option i have, other than getting another refurbed ipod from apple. Iv done this 3 times now, each time the one i get back seems to have worse and worse battery life.

not much i can do, this is why im looking to find out about the new ipods!! :)

Sony's hard drive based players have always been ugly and it looks like the hd5 will continue the trend. That being said i would still consider buying it cos like someone already said it'll be in your pocket or the pouch most of the time anyway.
