    Let's take a Stake of 10
    10 @ 12/1 = 120

    10 + 120 = 130

Your Stake (Pot) has now increased to 130
    130 @ 9/4 = 292.50

    130 + 292.50 = 422.50

In the above example 12/1 is a very nice price .

another quick question, do the doubls have to come in first place? or is there a way to a double e/w if so what way does it work out then?

Yep you can do an e.w double .eg

lets just say the horse in the first race is priced at 12/1
and the horse in the second race is priced at 8/1

in an each way bet 1st place pays 1/2 the odds
2nd place pays 1/3 the odds
3rd place pays 1/4 the odds
note some bookmakers will be paying 4th place in big races

If I do a €5 e.w double and both horse's win the following would occur
    €5 x 12 = €60 + €5back, =€65 + 1/2( €5 x 12)
    = €65 + 30
= €95 from first race winner

the €95 is then halfed automatically and placed as an e.w bet on the second race chosen thus €47.50 e.w
    €47.50 x 8 = €380 + 47.50back + 1/2(€47.50 x 8)
    = €380 +47.50 + 190
thus an overall winnings of €617.5
does that shed any light on the e.w double bet for ya.

for places in each race just chance the 1/2 in the bolded texts to 1/3 or 1/4 as needs apply.

Lenny - Doubles are basically 2 separate bets. Woosaysdan could easily have just put his €10 on the 2.00 race. If that came in put his winnings on the next horse. You still win the same amount (as a double) if they both come in. They're basically done to save time (convenience) or if the times of races, matches, etc. clash.

You're totally incorrect there oRnein9, bookies will pay the same place odds no matter what place a horse finishes. They don't pay 1/2 the odds for first, 1/3 for second and so on.

It is usually 1/4 the odds, 1/5 in races with 8 to 11 horses.

Your e/w bet is essentially two seperate bets, one to win one to place.

If you look at the help section on Paddy Powers website all of this is explained in detail.

2 big points of mis-information there!

There's no difference in the fraction of odds given for a place in a race.
ie. it's 1/5 the odds for a place no matter which place the horse finishes (1st, 2nd, or 3rd).
    Exceptions:
In any races of 5-7 runners, it's 1/4 the odds for the first 2 places.
In handicaps of 12-15 runners, it's 1/4 the odds for the first 3 places.
In handicaps of 16 or more runners, it's 1/4 the odds for the first 4.

    Each-way doubles aren't settled like this. It's win-to-win and place-to-place.
So in the above example, €65 goes on to a win bet on your second horse and the rest goes on to a place bet on the horse.

Edit: Basically, what masterK said. (Damn, I need to type faster.)
