Quick question is it possible to just connect two hard drives on the ide channels without having any sata drives or sata cables connected to the board ? Or do i have to deactivate the sata connection somehow ? My friend has just got a sata board but does not have any sata drives yet.

You should be able to disable the SATA in the BIOS somewhere.
