    Hi All

need help quick i have a chance to get the following

    Intel Pentium 4 3.4GHz / 1MB Cache / 800MHz FSB / Socket 478

the reason for the socket 478 and not 775 is my motherboard is socket 478 and cash at present means i cant go for a new mo/bo.

my mother board has a FSB of 533MHz -

Quection - will the 800 FSB 3.4GHz p4 work and if so will it be much slower on my S478 mother board.

motherboard is an MSI 845PE board with suport for 2 gb of ddr 333 memory.

    thanks in advance

if it fits the socket, it will work. It will work at 533mhz.

i know you said you have cash problems, so cant go for a 775, but you could always buy the 775 and wait a while. ? . it coud be worth it ..

It should work fine.. and i can only guess it wont be THAT much noteably slower..depends on what types of apps you try to run.

One thing you may also want to note is that the 478 may not support the full speed of the processor..
i got a 478 mobo for free, but when i stuck a 2.5ghz 478 chip in it it was clocked at 1.8 ...

just something you might want to check out with your motherboard.
    good luck.

You might want to look into that a bit more toolman.
    533/800 = .66
So your 3.4 would run at 2.26 ghz....

Probably not the best speed i've ever heard of ;)

Yup. Maybe to explain a bit more: The P4C or P4E on socket 478 works with a default 800FSB. This is quadpumped, so the single FSB is 200Mhz

    The P4 3.4 has a fixed multiplier of 17 (3400/200)

    When put in a single FSB 133 (533) motherboard, it will run at 17 * 133 = 2.26Ghz

You might however be able to significantly overclock the FSB of your motherboard, but my first advice would be to buy another mobo as well. Good ones going here on boards for €50 or €60

As unkle -said just pick up a new mobo, i dont see any reason in upgrading to any of the new intel sockets. A decent S478 is the same as a similar 775 setup.. There's no speed increase... +478 stuff is allot cheaper now that everyones upgrading. I'm builing my gf a full p4 3.2gz system with a gig of ram, 2 x 160gb hds etc for €500.
