I have always liked the old Beetle.
Well, I suppose I came to appreciated them more after restoring and repairing a few of them over the years!

They are a great car to work on, and the ease of obtaining parts is a major bonus - not to mention the lovely sound that eminates for a well serviced Beetle engine !

Does anybody here own one ?

Or plan to buy a Beetle ?

Here is an Irish site dedicated to the Beetle GT - www.thebugmeister.com

I've worked on a few of them and don't have any strong feelings for them - it takes a while to get used to the *ahem* ergonomics. There is such a readily available supply of parts they are an ideal starter classic but I am firmly entrenched in the Mini camp! Is that your Beetle Silvera? I currently share garage space with a pair of Formual Vee race cars which make much nicer noises than a standard Beetle. Not as handy for going to the shops though.

Well I had plans to restore a ford Capri mark 1 or 2, the trouble with this is that for love nor money you can't get your hands on a practical project.
So I'v decided to get a beetle instead, when I was a young fella my uncles restored a left hand drive bug that they brought in Sweden. The thing that stuck in my mind from that was the feeling when they reved the engine. You couldn't hear a thing it was so loud it was more like somebody grabed you and gave you a good shake. MMMMM

Ya can't beat the ole Beetle ! :D

    Interceptor,
The pics ain't of my Beetle.....thou I did restore a yellow one many years ago just like in the second pic.

I plan on buying another yellow Beetle in the future ! ;)

I prefer the 'elephants foot' type Beetle ............ wondering what that means anybody ?

i did a bit of work on a 1302 super beetle when i was fourteen, was hoping to have it ready for when i had my license etc, but i didnt know enough when buying it... and had to get rid of it after a few years, but i still learnt loads fomr it etc, it ended up being stripped and sold as parts, i was pretty annoyed, it was such a great car, they have loads of character etc. i hope to own one again... but it'd have to be the 1302s again... the 1.6 liter engine is nicer imo... though they could do with an extra gear.

I love Beetles too. Paul, do you post over on southernvolksfolks? Post pictures!

I'm planning on buying one really soon. I have my heart set on a 72 1302ls convertible but they are so hard to find! There's one for sale over in England but it's a trek and a half.. Not to mention it's going to be near impossible for me to get a classic convertible insured at me age (22).

I heard of a beetle convertible for sale in the Cork area i'm not sure of the model but I think its white in colour and its in regular use.

Yeah it was a good turn out, 40 odd vdubs :)
Here's my favourite beetle picture at the moment,
Paul Hamilton's street legal drag racer which ran a 9.95 at bug jam this year- that's 0 to 137.6 MPH in under 10 seconds

    alright lads

anyone know anywhere i can get a beetle properly resprayed? just bought a 1977 and the paint is cracked.

    any ideas on the cost?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,033 ✭✭✭Silvera

I don't konw of any bodyshops offhand, but make sure that you get a reputable sprayer/bodyshop to do the respray.

Three important words for any respray ......

    Preparation, preparation, preparation !

If any vehicle is not properly prepared prior to a respray this will show in the end result.

    - Make sure any rust holes are welded and not just fibreglassed/filled over.
    - All of the bodywork must be properly 'rubbed down'
    - Remove as much (preferably all!) of the chrome trim, lights, running boards, number plates, bumpers .....incl (if at all possible) all the windows.
    - And importantly in the case of a Beetle - be sure to remove the rubber strips between the wings and the bodyshell. Too often I have seen Beetles resprayed incl these rubber trims which looks terrible.

    Hope this helps

    (Ex-Panel Beater).

    I ADORE BEETLES!

I always wanted a vintage.. but I decided to start off I should go with a new one... and thats what I did last year. I own a black 1.4 2004 Beetle with cream interior... oh I love it so much. I would really love to get involved in some Bug club or something like that.

I dont have a pic on this machine but here is what my car kinda looks like
