Flexi time problem

    I am working in a place that has flexi time. However my boss is always coming up to me to do work just when I am leaving for lunch, leaving in the evening. I have been giving him warning that I am leaving in advance. It has come to a head where he asked me to do something as I was going out the door - I ended up getting soaking wet as I missed my bus. He is also coming over to my desk when I am on break. I have a medical condition which means that I have to eat at certain times and am getting ill from the delayed breaks. He has asked to meet me tomorrow to discuss - I do not know if it is going to be a reprimand or what. Help.

    Sounds like he's being unreasonable. If he's going to have a meeting with you tomorrow, I'd say he more likely to commend/promote you for working extra hard, not reprimand you for doing overtime :)

    You have to assert a position that if you're on lunch or going out the door you tell him "I'll do it later/tomorrow".

    My boss also has a tendency to do the same thing, but I just tell him the above and he's fine with it.

    Thanks for the advise Seamus - though I do think that he will give out. Normally I will stay back but this time I really wanted to leave. I do not know if I should go down the formal route for this or not. I have heard that they try this out with every new person. His boss is very understanding and nice about things and lets me leave or if she does want me to work is respectful about things. BTW I started work at 8.30 am that day, had a 30 min lunch and wanted to leave at 5.20 that day so I was not even leaving early. Sorry this is stressing me out and I am not sleeping as a result which does not help...

    I had a boss like that before. It wasn't fun when he managed to track down my mobile number :(

    But a little assertiveness can go along way, just stand up for yourself. Like you implied just there, they're probably just seeing with what they can get away with you. In my case I used to tell my boss I had free time earlier in the day and used to ask for how long the work had been sitting there. It was usually a case that the work was there since morning, they were just chancing their arm by trying to get me to do extra hours. Throwing that question at them was a good one because it managed to get them to question "hmm, do we want extra hours or extra work?".

    Stand up for yourself, don't let him give out. You have flexi time, that means you are absoultely entitled to leave if you wish. He can't complain, especially as you've given him warning! You're not doing anything wrong, he has no right to give out.

    Whats in your contract? Sounds like bullying to me. Its unprofessional to do this. Had the same problem myself. We used to just make crazy excuses to leave, or sneak out. The manager never gave up, but never got his way. Just led to a completely stressed out team, and the team performance, moral etc suffered badly. Ask HR for advice.
