i reckon it would be easy to do if you had..

    A) The approriate contacts

    B) Enough money to invest to pay for everything

    C) The eye to notice talent that can sell records and make you earn the money
    from 'B' back and

    D) Recruited decent marketing/advertising and all that jazz kinda people

even a small label needs money. to at least go halves with a band on the recording of an album. and the money to promote it. Theres no point in starting a record label that makes the band pay for everything, the band can do that themselves. you gotta have something to offer

An idea might be to work with a producer/engineer a la Martin Hannet/Factory, Jack Endino/Sub Pop etc etc, have a label with a sound and, if you're going to invest in recording someone, you want to br sure you'll get something that sounds good, which doesn't always happen with house engineers.

Do you need to register with someone to get the cd's barcoded etc?
Is there a distribution channel already setup for indie labels or would we have to go shop to shop?

What sort of percentage would the band expect to recieve.?

What is the break down costs of the cd's retail price?

    :o

This question concerns me, why do you want to do this, do you just want to make money? are you going to help out bands that deserve some success, ie, not **** them over.

Most good CD pressing plants will provide the Barcode and chart registration for free. See Music Matters International .ie

Maybe that wasn't the best question to ask, I'm just trying to to get an idea of the costs and the expected % a band would look for, I'm not interested in **** over bands, I have interests in some bands and have a good deal of band management experiance, just looking to go to the next step.
