    Hello all,

I'm not sure about the legal status of transmitting a (weak signal) TV station from my apartment (and I'm too lazy to do a google search) but I've decided to make this my next project.

Apparently it can be done for under €1000.

I'm going to need some help from "hands on" electronics people, i.e. you like soldering things.

    Let me know if interested.

    Thanks.

PS, I'm in Dublin City centre.

    Opinions appreciated.

I'm pretty sure its illegal to broadcast TV without a licence, but best of luck to you.

If it's illegal for one of those iTrip transmitters (the thingies that broadcast a signal from a personal music device to a radio frequency), then you can be fairly sure that broadcasting a TV signal is illegal.

    sounds like an interesting project.

but it is deffo illegal, at any power level.

they can also track your signal, most likely this would happen if they are using the equipment for detecting TV's for TV licence issues.

also under €1000, maybe so, but aint that a lot of money to prick around with?

you do realise that if you transmit from your house you will interfere with peoples TV reception, they will complian to seomone, ie NTL, RTE, and someone will eventually come out and find your signal.

if you get caught they will confiscate all the kit and prob fine you.

    having said all the disclaimer

electronics, i could do that. can you post links to the plans etc

If broadcasting your own TV signal were illegal, wouldn't those wireless video senders be illegal too? As long as you don't block anything else they probbly won't try to shut you down.

The wireless video senders probably operate at 2.4GHz.... broadcasting anything there under a certain power level is fine (laptop wireless signals and bluetooth do the same)... TVs and stuff are on a different band..

TBH, they wouldn't have to put too much effort into figuring out who's doing it though... they just have to look at who's on screen ;)

Just as an aside, FYI, as far as I know there is no equipment that will detect the use of TVs for licence issues. The Authorities just place the assumption that most houses have TVs, and will just to checkups on the houses that aren't paying a licence, because of the low probablility of a house not having a TV

Welcome back :) Havn't seen you post in a while. I remember cause you were my example in a thread of people who just disapear from boards...obviously, you're not dead...mystery solved.

Anyway, best of luck with the tv station, though i'd say it's illegal and stuff, but anywhooo if you need a sidekick for your show give us a shout ;)

You can aspire to be like this guy.

wireless video senders work on 2.4GHz, the international unregulated band. they're designed to transmit from one transmitter to one receiver, not to multiple houses. they're no more illegal than wireless networks, which work on the same frequency

to broadcast on the frequencies that that can be picked up by tv and radio, you need a license. they don't just say "ah he's not blocking anyone so we'll let him away with the several thousand a year license"

Other than a LEGAL CE marked 2.4Ghz Video sender (up to 100mW) at 80 Euro a TV transmitter without licence is Seriously Illegal.

They can raid without warrent and seize ALL electronic equipment.

You are an Idiot if you try this.

Even Wireless Experimenters (Radio Ham) must get a special licence extension and can't transmit on 2.4GHz band or any TV band.

    You don't need to solder.

Why not go whole hog and really get into trouble and spend 5000 Euro on some ready made DTT TX gear?
