Whats it mean when a race or a meet has SUSPENDED written on it , was trying to bet on the National but the big red Suspended put me off ....

It means what is says, that betting is suspended on the event in question. In the case of the Grand National today betting was suspended because the 48 hour declarations were due out.

In short no, You cant select two horses and bet them in a double, BUT the odd time i.e around festivals they put up a few special trebles e.g at cheltnham they had Baracouda/Moscow Flyer(/Hardy Eustace), but then you could only bet yes or no to the two/three winning. At the moment there is no such bets.

They do this to prevent people from profiting on horses that will not be declared. On betfair if you place an ante-post bet on a horse that doesn't run you lose your money. So people who are aware of the declarations/entries for a race before others would have an oppurtuinity to profit.

The reason bookies take your bet is that they don't care if the horse is a non runner, they will happily take your money. There was a story during the week were Paddy Power drifted a dog out from 4/6 to 20/1 when the dog was a non-runner in the Pall Mall Derby in England. There were also complaints on AtTheRaces last week about bookies giving odds and taking bets on horses for the 2000 Guineas that are not even entered in the race.

In the last few days before a big race most bookies go no runner no bet so you would get your money back if your selection did not run.

Also i think the market gets turned into a day-of-race market, and then your selection is non-runner no bet.
