they're basically a dvd distributor who sells awesome dvds!
they sell alot of rare and hard to find titles(all hand-picked!)
and they do their best to offer the best picture and special features possible.
they're an an american company(hence most of their discs are r1) but you can find some on r0

    criterion disks i own:
    Rashomon(directed by Akira Kurosawa)
    Chasing Amy(directed by Kevin Smith)

    on order:
    Slacker(directed by Richard Linklater)

    Cool. I've got

Otto E Mezzo by Frederico Fellini. It has an introduction by Terry Gilliam, before the whole La Mancha thing.

    Chasing Amy by Kevin Smith

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas by Terry Gilliam. Thanks to subtitles, I know now all the Hebrew drug slang I will ever need.

    Brazil by Terry Gilliam

It's nice to see a company that actually understands what the hell a DVD is for. It's for piling on the features and commentaries and different language subtitles and docs and deleted scenes and outtakes and anything else they have lying around.

If anyone has a spare $5,000 sitting around and can't be bothered building up a decent DVD collection themselves, they could do a lot worse than buying all the criterion DVDs at once (as of christmas 2004).

    Criterion DVDs are outstanding
    I own just three though

    My Own Private Idaho
    Short Cuts
    Slacker

region 1 is so much better for DVDs - both price and selection wise
